GOP state legislators in Wyoming have introduced a bill proposing a state ban on the sale of electric vehicles by 2035.
The bill claims Wyoming's power grid isn't set up for EV charging and that disposing of EV batteries will be challenging for municipal landfills, in addition to citing the importance of crude oil and gas to the state economy.
Wyoming's state legislature has yet to vote on the proposal, but the bill would also discourage state residents from purchasing EVs prior to 2035, if passed.
Bucking the electrification trend growing across the nation, state legislators from Wyoming are threatening to ban electric vehicles. Seriously, a group of six GOP lawmakers led by Senator Jim Anderson, R-Casper, introduced a bill that aims to ban the sale of EVs in Wyoming by 2035, the year that many states are set to ban the sale of internal-combustion vehicles.
Known as State Senate Joint Resolution NO. SJ0004, the proposal is in its fledgling stage after being introduced last week. The text of the bill cites the oil and gas industry as being one of the Cowboy State's proudest industries and one that is responsible for a significant revenue stream as well as mass employment for the people of Wyoming. Citing the historic usefulness of gas-powered vehicles in enabling continued growth in the state, these legislators claim that "Wyoming's vast stretches of highway, coupled with a lack of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, make the widespread use of electric vehicles impracticable for the state."
Additionally, the bill cites supply and environmental concerns over the continued production and subsequent disposal of EV batteries,

Let everyone decide what's best for himself/herself.
What BOTH California ( forcing purchase of EVs) and Wyoming ( banning purchase of EVs) are doing is TOTALITARIAN.
Well said.
I think EVs have a place as a local runabout.
I’m hoping to buy a nice used one for pennies on the dollar once the market rationalizes itself.
How about also, their fire departments aren’t properly equipped to put out li-ion battery fires....most are not
A slap in the face to the snowflake states. I applaud Wyoming.
Wyoming legislature has already struck it down, its DOA.
Not banning the "purchase." Learn to read your own articles.
EVs - the cars and the associated goonish madness - are becoming a hazzard at this point.
RE: Wyoming legislature has already struck it down, its DOA.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. At least unlike California, Wyoming’s legislators have common sense.
Let people buy what they want and let the market decide if a product will survive, not bureaucrats.
RE: Not banning the “purchase.” Learn to read your own articles.
The article states that they are banning the “sale”. If you ban sales, aren’t you in effect banning purchases?
Are you saying that if a Wyoming resident bought an EV from another state, it would not be banned in Wyoming?
What happens if a Californian who owns an EV decides to move to Wyoming and bought his EV with him?
Exactly. These days both sides are becoming control freaks.
Great point.
A friend is the fire chief of a pretty good sized metro county. I intend to have an in depth conversation on this with him, the next time we’re together. Hopefully 1Q this year. 1st half for sure.
I agree. The wrong decision, even offered up for the right reasons is still wrong.
They are not banning the purchase of EVs they are proposing banning the sale of them.
It’s nice to see some gov considering some sane environmental regulation.
RE: They are not banning the purchase of EVs they are proposing banning the sale of them.
So, if a Wyoming rsident bought an EV from a neighboring state, would driving the car in Wyoming be considered illegal under this law?
There is nothing in the article you posted saying the possession and use of an EV would be illegal under the proposed law.
Your imagination to the contrary is non-substantive.
RE: There is nothing in the article you posted saying the possession and use of an EV would be illegal under the proposed law.
There is nothing that says it WON’T BE illegal either. Are you sure?
You want me to prove a negative?
I can’t speak to imagined verbiage only to what was present in the article you posted.
In order to outlaw possession or use of something the law has to specify the prohibition of possession and use.
The article didn’t address that in any way. It only spoke of prohibiting sales.
Yeah, just like how CA will not allow the registration on non ev cars.
They already have been doing it on 2010 and older diesel trucks.
They can certainly refuse to use State funds for any EV infrastructure support.
But in general I agree with you.
+1
The market forces will hasten the development of hydrogen cells; at which time EVs will be relegated to the dustbin of stopgap technologies like CFLs!
RE: The market forces will hasten the development of hydrogen cells; at which time EVs will be relegated to the dustbin
And I will happily applaud this development.
AS LONG AS GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRATS STAY OUT OF THE WAY!
