Electric car batteries could be key to boosting energy storage: study

Electric car batteries could be used to boost power storage in the future, injecting electricity into the grid during times of scarcity or storing electricity during periods of excess, a new study found Tuesday.

Renewable energy is essential for the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to well below two degrees Celsius, but the need to scale up quickly and the intermittency of wind and solar have raised concerns about meeting electricity demand.

One way to help solve this problem is boosting the storage capacity of electricity grids, so that even when there is no sun or wind energy supply won’t be interrupted.

New research published Tuesday found that electric car batteries could help boost short-term grid storage in times of increased demand or lower supply, either by setting up “vehicle-to-grid” or “second use” schemes.

“Harnessing this potential will have critical implications for the energy transition,” said the study published in Nature Communications.

Secondary cell batteries (batteries which can be charged/discharged) have limited number of charge/discharge cycles. They lose capacity with each C/D cycle. How many days before the brand-new EV batteries are used up and can no longer hold a charge?

That problem has become far less over the years and continues to improve. Tesla’s batteries are expected to handle 20+ years of C/D, well beyond the life of the vehicle.

How many C/D cycles (State of Health/SOH) does a Li-ion have before it is 80%? 60%? What is the curve look like? Is it a steep drop-off in lost capacity, or is it linear?

My experience with my iPhone is 5yrs.

Yeah everybody plugged their electric cars into the grid and let the government draw down your battery power and reimburse you 0.02 per kilowatt hour while you paid 80

The secret is that not all Li-ion batteries are equal. There’s a reason your iPhone battery starts to die after a few years, they want you to replace it. Car Li-ion batteries are made differently and have a much better C/D profile. I don’t have exact numbers but I’ve read about this a couple of times.

...and after referencing ChatGPT :)

“A typical phone battery can last for around 300-500 cycles before its capacity starts to degrade.”

“Tesla’s batteries are rated for around 1000-1500 cycles before degradation of capacity, but this can vary depending on usage and charging patterns.”

And those are full cycles.

Something else....charging stations, as far as I know, are built to charge a battery, not to send power back to the grid. So, figure a charging station hw change, or full replacement.

Like kerry (did you know he served in VietNam?) said, we just need: mo money, mo money...what a scam...

The EV cars of the suckers out west charge the EV cars of the suckers out east and vice versa at certain times. When the crossover is problematic, the grid takes up the slack.
