Since taking up the post when Mr. Scholz’s government entered office last year, Ms. Lambrecht had been dogged by criticism. She had no previous experience of the military and opposition leaders accused her of lacking interest in heading the Defense Ministry. According to Germany’s best-selling daily, Bild, Ms. Lambrecht had been unable to name the different ranks of the German military in an interview with the paper.

Modern Europeans in government and to some degree Israelis too seem to resign at the drop of a hat where American beauracracts and particularly politicians will not resign for anything. Once our politicians figure out how to keep getting reelected you couldn’t pry their butts out of those positions with a deisel powered crowbar.

I know all the proper designations for the officers in each branch of the military (Kapitän zur See = Navy Captain; Fregattenkapitän = Commander; Korvettenkapitän = Lt.-Commander; etc.) - but despair when it comes to the Non-Coms in any branch. Besides Feldwebel (Sgt.), Gefreiter (Corporal), and Gemeiner Soldat (Private), there are just too many gradations.

The American system is just as complicated, for me.

Why is that necessary? Wouldn't three or, at most, four grades beneath "officer" suffice?

I'm asking you U.S. military personnel (and ret. personnel): Do you feel that the military could "get along" with just a handful of ranks beneath "officer?"

She’s an appointee but your point is still well-taken. I can remember 50 years when some gossip would come about a politician and they would resign within 24 hours, with no excuses, no defending of themselves, nothing. They would announce their resignation and be GONE.

The last German Defense minister who had a military background was Franz Josef Jung in 2009.

Germany has looked down on its arms forces for decades (with reasons).
