What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

What should you wear to work if you’re nonbinary?

It may not be the most pressing question that gender-nonconforming people face on the job, but with approximately 1.2 million LGBTQ+ Americans identifying as nonbinary, employers and employees alike are exploring what professional attire can look like.

“I think people treat me with more dignity when I dress more masculinely, but people are way nicer to me when I dress more femininely,” said El Layla Johnson, 33, a former restaurant server who is now a therapist.

For Johnson, getting dressed for work has been a struggle since adolescence.

“I just feel like there’s a manual or rule book that people receive and that my copy got lost in the mail,” Johnson said.

Johnson recalled regularly crying while getting dressed for work at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. It wasn’t just that they found the restaurant’s dress code to be ugly. Johnson had a hard time finding clothes that fit at all.

I have a bad habit of not refreshing when I’ve been away from the screen for a few minutes. I can see it’s a fatal flaw in being able to carry on a meaningful conversation.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, it’s been raining all afternoon but the starlings are still singing.

I’ve also been watching the most recent season of Death in Paradise and all I can say it, “THIS time, I know who did it!!”

Yeah. Like that.

I’ll never go to the garden without a shotgun again.

And then your tagline responds perfectly, "Zip! Thud. The end."

I don’t think the writing is quite as good this season. The characters aren’t quite themselves.

There were several different writers this season, so that may explain why the characters didn’t seem themselves. There are usually some catch phrases that are in every episode that each character uses, and they haven’t been evident this season. Like whoever did the writing wasn’t familiar with them, because they hadn’t watched any of the previous seasons.

I kept waiting for them to be said and was disappointed that they weren’t but figured the characters needed certain situations. Nope. It was the writing at fault.

I have one episode left, and will watch it tomorrow. I could watch it tonight but what would I have to look forward to?

I thought the scene where Commissioner Patterson told Marlon that Marlon had “lost his trust” by sitting the Sergeant exam and not doing very well was out of character. It would have been more like him to say something like, “Did you learn anything?”

Marlon got overconfident, realized he wasn’t ready (based on the results), and no harm done. I could see it being a bigger deal if he’d made an error in judgment that got someone hurt or worse, but not over just taking a test and doing poorly.

Exactly. Totally out of character for the two of them and the way they have always interacted. And the expression on the Commissioner’s face would have added the punctuation. As it was, the whole scene fell flat.

And we never did find out when Marlon was told that the exam was really on Monday, so that was out of character, too. Like I said — it’s like the writers had never seen an earlier episode, much less, an entire season of the show.

Right, they just skipped that. I do like Darlene a lot, though. Since she was only an occasional character in the earlier season, the new one hasn’t made her different.

Catherine is different, too: more interfering and not as perceptive.

Tyson-who-is-not-allowed-on-the-furniture just brought in a dead bunny.

It was right off the edge of the deck, eviscerated, head dangling, limbs mostly intact. We think maybe a hawk, or more likely, an owl kill.

He was not happy that we took it away from him.

Un’nions and Orthos

The Un’nions had planned an invasion of Ea’rth. But first they needed a staging point that would nourish their floral bodies. They chose an insignificant black dirt community in southern New York that suited their needs, then the invasion began...
At first, no-one noticed the bulbous invaders resting in the dirt. Awaiting the signal from Tan-en-baum, their leader, to awake and begin converting the native species to fertilizer. One by one, the farmers disappeared. But then, Ortho came up with a better nutrient for the native bulbs.... And the Un’nions became overfed and went comatose. And the Orthos were the only ones who knew about the invaders..... and smiled as they ate their hamburgers with onions....

Darlene had a “calming” influence on the Legendary Duane Myers (whom I miss dearly and who was a song and dance man in GB before this job) and her character has developed quite nicely. She has potential.

Catharine seems to be not quite so French and more intrusive, rather than being a confidante. She now seems to be written in as the meddling maiden aunt. Not a good change.

I hope the feedback from this season sets things right for the next one. IF there is a next one.

I wish that was me, sleeping in my warm bed.

Good morning. I hope you had a good night. Jake didn’t bother me with a text until about 0330 and then he pretended he was an Amazon scammer.

I woke up at 0300 and couldn’t go back to sleep. I just lie there for a while, feeling very tired, but then I finally got up because the pain was so intense. I’ll watch church from home today again.

The wobblies are pretty bad, as well, so I don’t trust myself to take that long walk to and from the building and parking lot. Even with a cane, I could be lethal to anyone walking near me.

Maybe a hot shower will help, but these days, the best I can get is tepid. Maybe warm on a good morning. It will be a while though, before the water even heats up that much. So here I sit.

Tyson-who-is-not-allowed-on-the-furniture was only trying to bring you a present. He must have startled whatever it was that had killed it when he went out to do his business.

Best not to get him started on raw meat. You never know where it could end.

Hey, Darks! That’s a rather tasty story. A little macabre, but still... It’s in true Darksheare style!

How have you been? You and your family have been in my prayers, so even though you haven’t made much of an appearance here, lately, I know you’re all OK.

Hang in there!
