I thought the scene where Commissioner Patterson told Marlon that Marlon had “lost his trust” by sitting the Sergeant exam and not doing very well was out of character. It would have been more like him to say something like, “Did you learn anything?”

Marlon got overconfident, realized he wasn’t ready (based on the results), and no harm done. I could see it being a bigger deal if he’d made an error in judgment that got someone hurt or worse, but not over just taking a test and doing poorly.

Exactly. Totally out of character for the two of them and the way they have always interacted. And the expression on the Commissioner’s face would have added the punctuation. As it was, the whole scene fell flat.

And we never did find out when Marlon was told that the exam was really on Monday, so that was out of character, too. Like I said — it’s like the writers had never seen an earlier episode, much less, an entire season of the show.
