New rule on pistol attachments to boost gun safety, U.S. Justice Department says (barf alaert)

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department announced on Friday a new rule targeting pistol attachments known as "stabilizing braces," implementing a key move in the Biden administration's efforts to beef up gun control regulations.

A stabilizing brace is an attachment to a pistol that functionally turns it into a short-barreled rifle, similar to a sawed-off shotgun. Such weapons are considered particularly deadly as they offer the power of a traditional rifle, but are much easier to conceal.

For decades, short-barreled rifles have been subject to strict regulations, including a law known as the National Rifle Act, which requires additional taxation and background checks for private transfers, among other provisions.

The new rule clarifies that pistols modified by a stabilizing brace are subject to those additional requirements, department officials said.

The new rule gives owners, manufacturers and distributors 120 days to report their stabilizing braces to the ATF tax-free. They may also remove the stabilizing brace or turn in any pistol modified by a stabilizing brace to the ATF.

It goes into effect once it is published in the Federal Register, likely next week, department officials said. (Reporting by Gram Slattery and Susan Heavey in Washington Editing by Matthew Lewis)

NM Governor hitting on all cylinders with proposed 9 round limit on all magazines and storage liability legislation. Going to be a wild spring.

IL has an AR ban. Colorado is going for the same.

It will be the pro infanticide anti gun block and the pro life pro second amendment block.

The article-—it’s a gun that’s a sawed off shotgun with the power of a rifle but deadly like a shotgun that’
s compact and powerful but it’s still a handgun...

Evil never stops being stupid...liars...and evil.

9, presumably to F over anyone using low cap 10 round mags from other mandates.

As usual MSM can be counted on to bleat out nonsense on command from The Agenda (tm). Who knew a brace triples the velocity for a handgun round to give it “the power of a rifle?” (Presumably blowing out -both- lungs now)

Imagine a human on the planet thinking these stocks would be
used in public anyway.

Hand guns are easy to conceal. Putting a long stock on one
isn’t going to improve that for crooks.

Can anyone remember the last time you saw armed robbery
footage with a handgun plus a stock?

Very few seem to understand what the phrase “shall not be infringed” means.

“A stabilizing brace is an attachment to a pistol that functionally turns it into a short-barreled rifle, similar to a sawed-off shotgun. Such weapons are considered particularly deadly as they offer the power of a traditional rifle...”

The author — or the BATF — are either hopelessly ignorant or they are lying (maybe both). A pistol brace does NOT increase the power of the pistol cartridge to that of a rifle of similar caliber.

I wonder if it pertains to the stock for my 1860 Army Colt? It has a shoulder stock that attaches to the grip.

I appreciate that you are in the right side of the argument, but have you seen an AR pistol?

Illinois’ ban will not be enforced by most county sheriffs, and it will be challenged in court.
If Pritzger wants em, he’s welcome to try…

9 round limit, of course that makes EVERY magazine illegal.
