The White House on Thursday said it is confident that an investigation into the discovery of classified documents will find that President Biden accidentally misplaced them.
“We are confident that a thorough review will show that these documents were inadvertently misplaced, and the President and his lawyers acted promptly upon discovery of this mistake,” Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, said in a statement.
Sauber added that the White House has “cooperated closely with the Justice Department throughout its review” and “will continue that cooperation with the Special Counsel.”
The statement comes after Attorney General Merrick Garland announced earlier Thursday that he would appointed Robert Hur as special counsel to investigate the discovery of classified documents at an office once belonging to Biden and at his Wilmington home. Hur, a Trump appointee who served as the U.S. attorney in Maryland, will return to the department to conduct the investigation.

This is where there is slight of hand going on. The media is focusing on Biden, et al, “doing the right thing” after the documents were discovered. Totally ignoring that he should not have had ANY classified documents what so ever. As you noted, possession of the classified documents are crimes in and of themselves, with many people having been prosecuted and jailed for violating.
Also, fedgov would not care about the details about why they were misplaced, except if espionage was a consideration. Least not for normal average people.

The right thing...Although I was seriously waiting for someone to point to the picture of the docs in his garage being in moving boxes and ask if that is taking classified documents seriously? Wow, I have had documents munched on by birds when I left the garage door open. The bottom line is inadvertent does not matter according to the law when classified documents are concerned. There are specific procedures that MUST BE FOLLOWED. Trump was asked to increase his security, and he did..

One hypothesis is that the stink that you are smelling is the deep state wrapping up these documents into never ending investigations that is meant to keep them from the GOP House investigations committees. Corruption coverup 2.0.
