Paris (AFP) – The last eight years were the warmest on record even with the cooling influence of a La Nina weather pattern since 2020, the European Union's climate monitoring service said Tuesday.
Average temperatures across 2022 -- which saw a cascade of unprecedented natural disasters made more likely and deadly by climate change -- make it the fifth warmest year since records began in the 19th century, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
Pakistan and northern India were scorched by a two-month spring heatwave with sustained temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), followed in Pakistan by flooding that covered a third of the country.
France, Britain, Spain and Italy set new average temperature records for 2022, with Europe as a whole enduring its second hottest year ever, Copernicus said in an annual report.
European temperatures have increased by more than twice the global average over the past 30 years, with the region showing the highest rate of increase of any continent on the globe.
"2022 was yet another year of climate extremes across Europe and globally," said deputy head of the Copernicus climate change service Samantha Burgess in a statement.
"These events highlight that we are already experiencing the devastating consequences of our warming world."
Large swathes of the Middle East, China, central Asia and northern Africa also saw unprecedented warmth averaged across the whole of 2022.

Last summer we (FL) had around 80-90 days straight of 90 degrees or higher. It was freaking GREAT! Hoping for a repeat this summer.
‘Course, in that ten years, their monitoring stations have all been taken over by urban heat islands. But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of a good piece of fiction.
Will someone please tell us all exactly how far the records go back? All the way to the beginning? Halfway back? Are these “records” verified? By who? I have my own records...BY the who. “Won’t get fooled again” was the anthem for a generation that has allowed themselves to be. Sad and sick and not pretty. ....but pretty simple.

So, all those graph that I’ve seen for years and years where the temp was much higher are lies?
Warning: Today’s climate fear porn. In actuality, CO2 levels are very very close to the lowest levels that they have been for millions of years. Not kidding. Look it up.
We’re still 6 degrees cooler than during the last interglacial period according to the ice core data sets...
So how unusual is that given that reliable records have been kept for no more than 175 years?
These leftists have a narrative, and they search 24/7 for anything they can cherry pick to confirm it. Hold on to your wallet.
I hope they are enjoying their”global warming” this winter.
What they don’t tell you is that a majority of the warming of the oceans is due to undersea volcanic activity, you k in, “for the greater good…”
A result of “adjusting” actual data. They like to make the past colder and the present warmer.
Prior to 2020, the UN, and by fiat the EU, dismantled over 150 worldwide weather reporting stations, resulting in gross averaging over huge territories.
In this averaging process, the reports still compute the numbers upward. Satellite data is even more suspect.
I love hot weather. I do sprinting outside.
There’s nothing like a toasty day for loosening up the muscles and sweating out impurities.
I liked it less when walking to Summer classes 2.5 miles each way with a laptop, 2 engineering books, and notebooks…
