Road Trip: Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas

TXsheppardafb2

Sheppard Air Force Base is a United States Air Force (USAF) base located five miles north of the central business district of Wichita Falls, in Wichita County, Texas, United States. It is the largest training base and most diversified in Air Education and Training Command. The base is named in honor of Texas Senator John Morris Sheppard, a supporter of military preparations before World War II.

The host unit at Sheppard is the 82d Training Wing (82 TRW), which provides specialized technical training and field training for officers, airmen and civilians of all branches of the U.S. military, other Department of Defense agencies and foreign nationals.

The 80th Flying Training Wing (80 FTW), also at Sheppard, conducts the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program, a multi-nationally manned and managed flying training program chartered to produce combat pilots for both USAF and NATO. This internationally manned and managed flying training program is the only one in the world.

The host unit on Sheppard Air Force Base is the 82d Training Wing, whose mission makes it the most diversified training base within AETC. It is a non-flying wing that conducts all technical training at Sheppard. The 982d Training Group (982 TRG) provides instruction in a wide range of specialties at Sheppard and also at more than 60 USAF installations worldwide.

The 82d Mission Support Group (82 MSG) and the 82 Medical Group (82 MDG) support these organizations. Together with the 80th Flying Training Wing more than 7 million U.S. and allied warriors have been trained.

The 80th Flying Training Wing launches 50,000 sorties per year and is recognized as the busiest joint-use airfield in the Air Force. Its 201 aircraft flew about 250 training missions per day in 2017, which equates to more than 66,000 flight hours annually.

The wing delivers more than 200 Undergraduate Pilot Training graduates annually, along with 150 graduates of Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals and Pilot Instructor Training graduates. Fourteen NATO countries participate in the unique Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program.

SAY HEY, ALL,

THANKS FOR THE ROAD TRIP!

I LOVE PLANES. ONE OF MY FEW REGRETS IN LIFE WAS NOT TAKING THE TIME TO GET A PILOT’S LICENSE.

THANKS, AGAIN.

My son just separated from the USAF last month. His last three years were as a flight instructor (and more) at Sheppard’s ENJJPT training program. He enjoyed it as a program. He loved flying these training planes in close formation and aerobatics. He and his young family found Wichita Falls to be a nice place to be.

The God Who Redeems
Read: Isaiah 43:1–7

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. Isaiah 43:1

As part of a sermon illustration, I walked toward the beautiful painting an artist had been creating on the platform and made a dark streak across the middle of it. The congregation gasped in horror. The artist simply stood by and watched as I defaced what she’d created. Then, selecting a new brush, she lovingly transformed the ruined painting into an exquisite work of art.

Her restorative work reminds me of the work God can perform in our lives when we’ve made a mess of them. The prophet Isaiah rebuked the people of Israel for their spiritual blindness and deafness (Isaiah 42:18–19), but then he proclaimed the hope of God’s deliverance and redemption: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you” (43:1). He can do the same for us. Even after we’ve sinned, if we confess our sins and turn to God, He forgives and restores us (vv. 5–7; see 1 John 1:9). We can’t bring beauty out of the mess, but Jesus can. The good news of the gospel is that He has redeemed us by His blood. The book of Revelation assures us that in the end, Christ will dry our tears, redeem our past, and make all things new (Revelation 21:4–5).

We have a limited vision of our story. But God who knows us “by name” (Isaiah 43:1) will make our lives more beautiful than we could ever imagine. If you’ve been redeemed by faith in Jesus, your story, like the painting, has a glorious ending.Glenn Packiam

How have you messed up? What has God provided for your restoration and redemption?

Dear Jesus, thank You for never giving up on me. I surrender to You and ask that You please redeem what I’ve ruined.
