China’s new Covid surge is crippling the world’s most important factories and biggest ports

he surge in Covid-19 cases in China is impacting the completion of manufacturing orders, according to CNBC Supply Chain Heat Map data.

Logistics managers are warning clients that because of the spike in infections, factories are unable to complete orders — even with U.S. manufacturing orders from China already down 40% due to an unrelenting demand collapse.

Orders for ocean bookings continue to be softer according to SONAR Data.

“With 1/2 or even 3/4 [of the] labor force being infected and not able to work, many China manufacturers can not operate properly but produce less than their optimal outputs,” Hong Kong-based shipping firm HLS wrote in a note to clients. “The container pickup, loading, and drayage (trucking) are also affected as all businesses are facing the impacts of COVID. We expect a very soft volume after the Lunar New Year because a lot of factories have slowed production due to the increasing infection, and have to cancel or delay the bookings for the 2nd half of January and also early February.”

HLS also noted that “All indications that the Chinese cities are experiencing infection peaks is based on the surge of infected family members, friends, and colleagues, the long lines at the fever clinics at hospitals across the country.”

Three major ports across China are experiencing supply chain delivery problems because of Covid, according to the note.

Were these not the same voices that said it was OK to rely on China and to not worry how much formerly American business was migrating there?

That’s OK. In China, they’ll simply take the overflow patients out and shoot them.

This is one way to eliminate the backlog of container ships sitting offshore...and the glut of empty cargo containers that have accumulated at various US ports. Before you know it, the USA will be shipping containers full of “tchotchke” to China.

Stateside container housing market hit the hardest...

America having anything whatsoever “important” in China means we’re doing something very wrong.

America is doing nothing that I’ve seen to bring back manufacturing. President Trump was big on it but nothing ever happened.

Agree, Let China crash and burn. If companies are too stupid to realize China is a bad place for business, let them fail too.

Prepper ping - China adversely affected by Covid infections in the workforce in manufacturing, labor, and material handling

Are they getting really ill or are they just preventing from working while testing positive?

It is not clear.

Hi.

After these two years I wonder if the Chicoms are trying to cull their population. And ours.

Has Xi had the Rona yet?

Know one outside of China really knows. The CCP is not reporting to the WHO correctly. We know they are counting covid deaths differently and we know some hospital systems in China have collapsed.

With China we can’t trust any of the information. What’s their vax rate? Are the deaths a result of vax induced immunosuppression?

Other large Asian countries such as India and Indonesia don’t seem to be having this problem.

Is this some type of purge to weed out undesirables using CoVid as a cover story?

M Kehoe :" After these two years I wonder if the Chicoms are trying to cull their population. And ours.

There has been made a suggestion that China may even be trying to develop "herd immunity" by opening up from the lockdown Covid restrictions
prior to the 40 day long, Lunar New Year celebrations
That is a valid concern given the fact that the USA/China trade is down 40% due to the Covid infection rate, and its variants
The infection rate impacts on manpower available for manufacturing, material handling, transport, loading, and shipping

Anecdotal information: one of my daughter’s classmates is from the PRC here on a student visa. Her entire family is apparently sick and her grandfather was admitted to the ICU - all this happened within the past 2 weeks.

I find it curious that things have changed this quickly in the PRC - they only started lifting constraints in the past 3 weeks or so. Personally, I think they are detecting the common cold or the flu and not a (duh duh duuuuuuuuh) Covid-19 variant.

Sorry if I come across frustrated, but I am. Chinese vax doesn’t work.(Sinopharm and Sinovac) This information came out in early December. So their vax rate is meaningless. They have been offered our vax and have so far declined it.

Other nations are likely not using the Chinese vax. India is currently using four vaccines - Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik V and Corbevax
