Patients, mostly older people, lay on stretchers in hallways or took oxygen while sitting in wheelchairs as a COVID-19 outbreak stretched public health facilities’ resources in China’s capital Beijing, even after its reported peak.
The Chuiyangliu hospital in the city’s east was packed Thursday with newly arrived patients. Beds ran out by midmorning, even as ambulances continued to bring more people in. Hard-pressed nurses and doctors rushed to take information and triage the most urgent cases.
The crush of people seeking hospital care follows China abandonment of its most severe pandemic restrictions last month after nearly three years of lockdowns, travels bans and school closures that weighed heavily on the economy and prompted unusual street protests in a country that quashes political dissent.
The outbreak appears to have spread the fastest in densely populated cities first. Now, authorities are concerned as it reaches smaller towns and rural areas with weaker health care systems. Several local governments began asking people Thursday not to make the trip home for the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, signaling lingering worry around opening up.
Overseas, a growing number of governments are requiring virus tests for travelers from China, saying they are needed because the Chinese government is not sharing enough information on the outbreak. The European Union on Wednesday “strongly encouraged” its member states to impose pre-departure COVID-19 testing, though not all have done so.
Italy — the first place in Europe where the pandemic exacted a heavy toll in early 2020 — became the first EU member to require tests for passengers from China last week, and France and Spain followed with their own measures. That followed the imposition by the U.S. of a requirement for a negative test result within 48 hours of departure.

A report eluded to questioning if this is even Covid?
I think that when China spent the two years, preventing covid from spreading which weakened everybody’s immune system, that it is now taking its toll.
However, it’s really a “who knows” situation, as China cannot be trusted to tell the truth on anything.
“...Beijing hospital runs out of beds...”
Fire-up the crematoria.
Yeah, the trust factor here is zero.
If the Shanghai hospital systems has collapsed as indicated in reports I am seeing this morning, it is much worse that China is leading the world to know.
Many Chinese are questioning if this is even Covid. But, it was going to sweep through the population at some point. You cannot have the entire population live in a bubble.

The BBC released a report over the past week, mostly from a reporter from India who is assigned there by an Indian media group but also files reports with the BBC.
The WHO has a Covid death specifier that is “death caused by the virus or substantially contributed to by the virus”.
China uses death declaration different from anywhere else in the world. They will not declare a Covid death unless there is respiratory failure.
This is a very rare thing, particularly on ventilators. Covid kills the people on ventilators by shutting off oxygen transfer into the blood. So brains will die or heart dies or kidneys die, but the ventilator is still pumping air in. The lungs did not tear under ventilator pressure, so there is no respiratory failure.
It is this that causes China to report tiny numbers of Covid deaths.
The Indian reporter said she visited 2 hospitals and both were packed, with patients laying in hallways.
BBC estimates China has 15,000 dead per day. Japan right now is setting all time Covid death count records.
Undoing restrictions is essentially murder.
Maybe they can build a 750 bed hospital in a week—like they did in Wuhan.
Karma is a bitch.
Oh, one other thing in the report. Indications are the Sinovac vax is just as effective as Sputnik V and AstraZeneca, and Covaxin. Essentially all vax in the world works as well as others.
And they all fade and become useless.
If true once again proves lock downs were worthless. You need to let it rip.
Yeah. We aren’t buying it this time.
Wait, they have lockdowns and masks, how can this happen?
‘Undoing restrictions is essentially murder.’
aren’t your joints sore from maintaining a fetal position for the past three years...?
So are there 400 MILLION DEAD CHINESE YET??????
Running out of beds is the same Chinese BS from 2020, 2021, and 2022. China is saying in some areas 95% infected, HOW MANY DEAD?
Since they are not touting massive deaths, China simply has the Flu.
They have dozens of “ghost cities” they could have used for quarrantine, and crematoria, but they sit empty.
It is my understanding that the hospital system in Shanghai collapsed this weekend. https://youtu.be/btceM8GWWNw
Wow just wow. I wonder how reliable this is?
Gravitas has been pretty good. And it is even scarier. I feared this would happen.
ping to post 18
Unpossible. They were all vaccinated and we all know Wuhan Flu is only a pandemic of the un-vaccinated.
