McCarthy announced that the first order of business for the 118th Session of Congress will be repeal of the 87,000 armed IRS agents who are on the trail of the American public, which was met with unanimous agreement within Republican ranks.

Obviously, this will go nowhere, the money has already been approved and the Senate (and Biden) won't go along with it, but so much of the next two years is necessarily going to be posturing and posing.

The dems and establishment republicans raided the treasury in the lame duck session so there's not a whole lot of power of the purse to wield this year. The DoJ won't do a thing as a result of any criminal referrals or special boards of inquiry, so identifying crimes and seeing that they're being tried is out. The dems have already shown that they'll spin this thin House majority relentlessly anyway, and the media will gleefully adopt whatever dem narrative that they're handed.

They might as well make this a two year campaign commercial for 2024. Set expectations low, and then lower them, because actual meaningful legislation getting passed is going to be nil.

Snakes have no memory and no honor. They just bite. They don’t care about their actions. They just care about themselves.

My confidence in GOP speakers doing great things is nearly undetectable.

That's very encouraging!

“The question remains whether newly elected Speaker McCarthy, with an F 54% Liberty Score from the Conservative Review, will provide the necessary leadership on behalf of the Republican principles that put the needs of the American people over personal ambition.”

His “leadership” will amount to being dragged, kicking and screaming, the whole way.

They never do keep their promises- he’s got the thing he wanted- now his attitude will be to tell those who opposed him to go pound sand when they call him to account for his promises

Hope im wrong, but once a snake, always a snake usually- He was in talks with other rinos when Trump was president to oust him from the presidency- can’t understand how Trump still supports him-

Repeal of the $600 income from selling your stuff should be repealed. So much of it is garage sale stuff...not dealer stuff. Just not right.

At this point, I think McCarthy has to honor his agreements. It would be just awful for the Republican brand, and disastrous for him personally for his first political act to be to break the promises that got him the Speakership. If that's going to be what defines his tenure, he won't get anything done if nobody trusts him to follow through on his deals, especially since much of his promises were to bring the House back to the regular order that existed for 100 years prior to Pelosi.

It is unusual that McCarthy himself, elected to the U.S. House in 2006, has been the least-tenured Majority Leader in history, having served only seven years in Congress before his ascent to party leadership positions, a string of them.

Having found himself ensconced in political turmoil within the Republican House, he served another nine years before being elected as Speaker, making him the Speaker with the least congressional time in office since 1891. That political turmoil (which included tussles with members of the Tea Party) led to formation of the Freedom Caucus in 2015.

I posted this brief summary of McCarthy's rise to power in the live thread:

Can anyone remind me how McCarthy got to this point? How did he become the “chosen one” for the Speakership in the first place?

It goes back quite a few years.

In 2008, Denny Hastert was the Speaker when Mark Foley (R-FL) was caught in a sexting scandal with male House Pages. John Boehner was the Majority Leader and Eric Cantor was the Majority Whip.

Nancy Pelosi hammered Republicans with a "for the children's safety" campaign theme and voters threw out the Republicans and Pelosi became Speaker.

When Democrats took over in 2009, Hastert left and Boehner/Cantor retained their leadership roles in the minority.

Two years later, voters restored Republicans to the House majority and Boehner became speaker, making Eric Cantor the Majority Leader and Kevin McCarthy became the Majority Whip.

Another two years later, Eric Cantor lost his primary to local college economics professor Dave Brat, elevating McCarthy to Majority Leader and Steve Scalise became the Majority Whip.

Four years after that, Boehner was thrown out by a motion to vacate, where he lost the vote. Paul Ryan became the Speaker after McCarthy declined to run.

Four years after that, Democrats retake the House, Ryan resigns from Congress, and McCarthy/Scalise retain their leadership roles in the minority.

And here we are now. McCarthy is elevated to Speaker.

The question remains whether newly elected Speaker McCarthy, with an F 54% Liberty Score from the Conservative Review, will provide the necessary leadership on behalf of the Republican principles that put the needs of the American people over personal ambition. If he is, fine. If he is not, he may be looking for a new job in two years.

Or sooner...

No. The whole idea of politicians exacting promises from each other for votes is just hilarious. Like they don’t know how that works.

He’ll do just enough to try to keep them in line for when he needs their votes, of course. That’s how politics has always worked.

I think the most important commitment is one given to incoming Rep. Ana Paulina Luna - the commitment to fully investigate J6. Meaning an investigation that bot looks at government involvement/infiltration/possible instigation of the riots, but also looks at the Democrats just concluded J6 investigation. So, call this "J6-II" if you will. It needs to be conducted thoroughly and without a lot oof grandstanding or publicity.

I'm not sure who is best to head the investigation - but it probably would help to have a very senior Rep. - maybe one who is not running for re-election in 2024 and can commit the time to mining every discernable fact and sharing everything discovered in raw form with the public.

And if the House switches again that motion will be gone again. I don’t think a lot of voters realize that these kinds of rules are only good for as long as a party holds a majority.

A lot like EO’s...you can sign a lot of them during your time in office but after you are gone they can be rescinded by the next guy...as we have seen.

No I believe he will worm his way around his concessions as soon as possible then knife those who stood against him in the back with the sharpest blade possible.

The fact that McCarthy had to be coerced into agreeing to common sense rules speaks volumes. He will do everything he can to protect the establishment and donor class.

I expect McCarthy and his fellow travelers to undermine any conservative agenda starting on day one.
