Fentanyl: The horrendous killer of our time

Anyone who takes even a cursory look at the news – regardless the source – has to be aware of fentanyl – the latest of the killer drugs assaulting our society. It wasn't too long ago that virtually no one had ever heard of it. Now, it seems to be everywhere, and from what we are told, it is a killer of staggering proportions.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is said to be 50 times more potent than heroin. While the drug is found in all states, California is particularly hard hit, and the source, it appears, is movement of the drug across the border from Mexico, with Interstate 5 being a main trafficking route.

Authorities believe the original source of the drug is China, and there seems to be no limit to the quantity that ends up in the U.S. There is no information available as to whether our government has had any contact with China about this movement of the drug.

In a recent report from California Gov. Gavin Newsom, law enforcement, just in California this year, seized 28,765 pounds of the drug. According to Newsom, that's enough to kill the entire of population of North America, TWICE!

Fentanyl has legit, critically important, uses in human medicine for anesthesia and certain types of pain management. I suppose fentanyl and it’s even more potent analog carfentanil are equally important for certain veterinary medical uses. But the amounts needed for legit purposes are dwarfed by the amounts manufactured for illicit uses. So setup government controlled or tightly, transparently, regulated production sufficient to feed the med/vet supply pipeline. If other countries wish to do the same, fine so long as their, and our, production is mutually monitored. Illicit diversion from the official sources and pipelines should be charged and punished as conspiracy to commit manslaughter as such is the de facto result. The current production and transportation of literal tons of the stuff is de facto chemical warfare against us. Current official US policy, albeit grossly ignored, calls for literally nuking the guilty. Reminding the world of that and then instituting mere conventional attacks against the means of illegal production and those complicit in it would be a measured response in comparison. If foreign governments claim to control sites of illicit production they may shut them down themselves. But if they don’t then they are either not truly in control there so cannot complain about US attacks on “their” territory and people, or are complicit and deserve to be targets themselves. Admittedly some powerful portions of our own swamp deserve to be targets as well.

Fake prescription pills are being manufactured in clandestine factories across the country and distributed by drug dealers using traditional methods and across the internet. A lot of people who are addicted to pain killers - both legitimate and illegitimate users - are buying the drugs when their legal prescription runs out early.

A coworkers daughter had endometriosis real bad. A disease I would not wish upon anybody. She was prescribed transdermal pain medication patches. Over time she began opening the patches and desolving the medication within the patch and injecting it. Not long after that, she started injecting more than had been prescribed for a single day. At the end of the month she had to find a substitute.

The strongest stuff available was not managing her pain. CPS had to get involved and took my coworkers grand daughter away and awarded custody to my coworker after years of legal battles and foster care. It got really ugly.

She would call my coworker and make up any excuse to quote borrow money unquote. She had been placed in one rehab after another with no results. Soon she was buying Oxycotin off the streets. The last month I worked there my coworker received a phone call. I could hear him crying in the cube next to me.

His daughter bought some fake Oxycotin laced with too much Fentynal and died. It was the saddest thing I ever heard. I walked around the cube and told him I was sorry. There was nothing else I could do. He retired within days.

He continued working for years in a vain attempt to keep his daughter alive. Her addiction was fatal; Here desease incurable and painful. When she died he immediatly retired.

Other dealers across the country are making fake ADHD, ADD, and other psych meds and distributing them to college kids who end up abusing them from years of use often beginning in elementary or middle school. The counterfeit pills are indistinguishable from the real thing.

Parents across the country are getting calls that their child died from a fake Adderall that their kid bought from a “friend” to “study” and never woke up.

It’s bad. Real bad. It’s not just junkies dying.

There has been incidents of counterfeit drugs laced with Fentyinal making it into legit pharmacies from the cartels and unsuspecting customers dying.

The potential for more frightening large-scale disaster scenarios is real.

Someone needs to come up with a test strip that checks for and indicates the presence of Fentanyl before this gets serious.

> first time exposure

Drug abusers who’ve survived their first exposure or who started on weaker opioids, will build up some tolerance and take more to kill. The innocent have no such tolerance. The amount of heroin or other older, weaker opioids needed to kill was less likely to be taken accidentally.

True. We both had surgeries recently and it appeared on both of our itemized bills.

#3 I remember the gas killed most of the hostages!

How is Fentanyl made?
I would think following the ingredients being purchased would lead to those that make it. China is said to be a big manufacturer.

You can’t even tell if that is a blob on the photo or negative, much less shoe.

Not that it matters much either way!

>>People in Government are making money. yes....exactly....

the only advice I would give is to NOT ever indulge in drugs of any kind, including weed....

don’t start and don’t indulge....

starve the beast.....

why would people give control of their lives over to evil people....be it drugs, alcohol or porn.<<

Agree completely.

I was terrified of the thought, which was reinforced by the U.S. Navy. The Navy said they’d kick anyone out who showed a weakness for ANY DRUG!

Many drug dealers are ‘purposely’ lacing other drugs with fentanyl in order to get fentanyl addicts, since it's cheaper to produce, ship and conceal....and harder for authorities to find. Dealrs never worry about the addicts as there's always more people in line to sustain his business and that addiction.

It is the DESIRE for fentanyl that is not assaulting, but destroying, our society.

Fentanyl is inert. It does not assault or destroy anything by itself. It is quite useful in anesthesia and ICU practice.

Having to live in ways contrary to human nature is, quite literally, driving people insane.
