DeSantis Appoints Six Conservatives as New College Trustees
WFLANews.com ^ | 1-6-23 | Gordon Byrd

Following up on his comments about "trendy ideology" and partisan interest groups in higher education, Governor Ron DeSantis has named six people with ties to conservative institutions to the Board of Trustees at New College in Sarasota. The appointments are subject to confirmation by the State Senate.

The most prominent of the six nominees is Christopher Rufo, a Senior Fellow at the New York-based Manhattan Institute. Rufo has recently led the fight, according to a release from the governor, against critical race theory in American institutions, resulting in legislation in fifteen states. Rufo said in a tweer, "my ambition is to help the new board majority into a classical liberal arts institution. We are recapturing higher education."

Other nominees include Dr. Matthew Spalding, the dean of the school of government at Hillsdale College, Charles Kesler, editor of the Claremont Review of Books, Dr. Mark Bauerlein, a professor at Emory University who wrote the book, "The Dumbest Generation Grows Up," Jason "Eddie" Speir, founder of Inspiration Academy, a Christian school in Bradenton, and Debra Jenks, a lawyer and arbitrator who graduated from New College and serves on the nominating commission for the state's Fourth District court of appeals.

The governor's Chief of Staff, James Uthmeier says they hope to make New College "a Hillsdale of the South."

Since Tuesday's inaugural, DeSantis' administration has been asking state colleges and universities for information about resources they're putting into activities related to critical race theory and DEI -- diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Dang! This is the way it is done. I, and others, have spent decades saying that conservative governors should appoint conservative Trustees to the boards of their universities, so that the Trustees can then have influence on the selection of faculty and administrators. That is the way the conservatives in the Southern Baptist Convention were able to get the liberal profs out of their seminaries back in the 1980s. The conservatives got conservatives to be elected as the convention President, who then appointed conservatives as Trustees to the seminary boards, who then got rid of the liberal profs. This is exactly what conservative governors should be doing. DeSantis is the Man!!

Back when I was looking at which Florida school to attend, I considered New College, which then was part of the USF system.

But I learned, the student body made Cal-Berkeley look conservative.

I can imagine there are heads exploding there now.

Good! In fact, great!

One of the reasons our colleges no longer teach anything and degrees have become meaningless and even employers aren’t asking for them is because of the infestation of lefty wokeism, not only in the high-end private universities, but in your basic state university.

It can only be stopped by appointing good people to the trustees or regents.

DeSantis is on a roll! Happy New Year, y’all!

Nice, but flip the state universities. FSU should be at the top of the list

Actually there are certain college’s an unwoke employer won’t even consider hiring someone from.

That last thing they want is a new self absorbed, demanding, entitled little twit to contend with.

Ooooops, ended 2 sentences consecutively with a preposition.....Obviously I wasn’t an English major.

This school will definitely benefit from having some adults in charge.

I had a full scholarship to New College when I graduated from VHS in 1979 -- I bailed it to go into the Navy. It was pretty liberal then, but more 'hippy dippy' liberal than the militant Marxists so prevalent today. I figured the world already had enough starving philosophers and didn't need another.

If Republicans had any brains or balls, there would be ZERO funding at state universities for “gender studies” or any of the other farcical “studies” programs in red states.

He not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. Usually GOP governors are convinced they have to appoint liberals in order to be “bi-partisan” and “take the high road”.

I’ve never understood why they fall for that line.

Our loser of a governor in Texas has failed the UT and A&M and other state colleges by NOT getting ultra conservatives on the boards of regents.

"Ooooops, ended 2 sentences consecutively with a preposition.....Obviously I wasn’t an English major."
Our English language has Germanic roots where ending sentences with preposition is common because the preposition is part of the verb.

DeSantis is the Man!!
I want to keep him here as long as possible as governor and give him a large voice in choosing his replacement. I shutter to think of what we could have had in his last election.

I wish I had known that about German in college. (I knew English had strong Germanic origins!) English professors challenging my endings with prepositions. I would have answered with ‘expressing the Germanic roots of English’.
Probably wouldn’t have worked!

There is an interesting youtube video where the author does a conversation in English using only Germanic origin words. It’s perfectly understandable. It does sound odd. It reminds one of a Hollywood B movie that takes place in medieval times where they try to make the dialogue sound ‘medieval’.

Appointing trustees is good, but I'm afraid real change will only come after presidents and department heads are replaced. The professor and department head level is largely hired on their ability to bring in (government ) and other grant money. Or at least that's the way it used to be.
