This one member motion to vacate is ridiculous. So one disgruntled member can tie up the whole House? Anyone not believe that Boebert or Gaetz will try it?

That rule was in place for at least 100 years before Nancy Pelosi reversed it, it’s not a crazy rule at all

Can Democrats also propose a motion to vacate?

It’s been done once since 1910, in 2015. Boehner resigned instead of facing a vote.

I heard Boebert say yesterday that this was always the rule until Pelosi changed it.

It was the status quo prior to Pelosi regaining the gavel in 2018. This just restores what was previously available for probably a hundred years in the House.

= = =

Not sure it would tie things up.

If the one member was out of line, all the others would just vote no, and it’s over. And he may get repercussions.

I wouldn’t call for a vote unless the speaker had gone wacko and many others recognized it also.

"This one-member motion to vacate is ridiculous."

It was the accepted procedure for nearly 200 years until Nancy Pelosi changed it.

No big deal. One member motion was the rule for a couple centuries, changed in 2018. Doesn't mean there will be a vote on the issue, the last vote was around 100 years ago.

Stop hyperventilating:

Fact check: When was the “motion to vacate the chair” rule last used in Congress?

You see this as a bad thing? A house that does absolutely nothing is an improvement.

I THINK you are misunderstanding. Yes “ONE” member can call for a vote but he/she would have to have the votes to remove the speaker which, barring unusual circumstances, would be unlikely.

The VOTE itself would “normally” take about 15 minutes.
