Electric chair, firing squad’s legality at S. Carolina court
Associated Press ^ | January 5, 2023 | Jeffrey Collins

South Carolina’s highest court will hear arguments Thursday on whether a newly organized firing squad or the old electric chair are legal ways to execute inmates in the state, which has been unable to obtain drugs for lethal injections.

A lower court judge ruled in September that South Carolina lawmakers “ignored advances in scientific research and evolving standards of humanity and decency” when they passed a law effectively forcing condemned prisoners to choose between electrocution or the firing squad.

The state appealed and the South Carolina Supreme Court will hear arguments Thursday over whether the 2,000-volt electric chair or the bullets fired at the heart by a three-person firing squad violate state constitutional provisions against cruel and unusual punishment like those in the U.S. Constitution. They are not likely to issue a ruling for several months.

The death penalty remains under near constant scrutiny in the United States. Tennessee issued a report last week saying the state has not followed the new rules it made for lethal injections in 2018, killing inmates with drugs that hadn’t been properly tested. …

There’s plenty of fentanyl around. Use that for something useful

Nitrogen or carbon monoxide. Both painless and effective.

article: "the state, which has been unable to obtain drugs for lethal injections."

So in a state overflowing with deadly illegal drugs, they can't find any to kill someone? Fentanyl kills people every day in South Carolina. The willing victims dose up, fall asleep, and die. I wonder what the problem is?

Fentanyl kills big bucks like George Floyd on a daily basis. Fentanyl is built Ram Tough, and can handle the toughest jobs. And veterinarians have a supply of drugs to put down animals every day of the week. If what veterinarians do were cruel, the animal worshipers from PETA would let you know.

Criminals don’t deserve the honor of a firing squad. Hang them.

There’s an easy solution. The suppliers can just start selling the state their painless nighty-night drugs again.

Remember when used in assisted suicide the drugs cause no pain and result in a peaceful and dignified death. When used in lethal injection they cause horrible unimaginable pain.

“evolving standards”. Horsechit.

Bullets work. Ropes work. The electric chair works. They are all cheap and get the job done quickly and efficiently. That’s all that matters.

Its up to the legislature to determine what the community standard is - not some unelected judge.

Exactly. Plastic bag over the head. Velcro strap around the neck with a hollow plastic tube inserted into which pure nitrogen flows.

This is not a cost, availability, or cruelty issue.

It is a political issue.

Put the rumor out that the condemned is set to testify against the Clintons or is going to publish a list of Jeff Epstein's clients. Let them go and see what happens.

Unfortunately I had to have 2 beloved dogs put down this past year. No pain and quick. Very easy for the pets. Very difficult for me and my family.

What are they putting in criminals that makes it otherwise?

An atmosphere of pure nitrogen will kill you quickly without pain. Every breath we take is already mostly nitrogen so it is the lack of oxygen which results in death.

Well obviously, the solution is to suspend all executions.

(I despise these jackasses. Is electric chair legal? Ask the old folks. Good God.)

Agreed.

Don’t know why gas chambers aren’t more widely used. Is it an efficiency thing?

Used to be common for the pound (”shelter” for you enlightened nuts).

But the truth is, every killing is too evil for many people, so they oppose every method rather than just coming out and saying no one - or dog - should be killed.

Should let the condemned choose their method of execution.
I think I would pick the firing squad.

Looks like to me, 6 men with 22s would be the best. OR, even one man to push a button firing 6 22s at once.

Cheap, quick, and sure.

-—evolving standards of humanity -—

Translation: Execution by fad is demanded

Meanwhile defense attorneys enrich themselves by erecting meaningless stumble blocks. There must be an end to the lawyerly tyranny prohibiting the execution of convicted criminals. There should be only one appeal within 90 days and certainly less than 180 days.

Addendum: In addition to the defense lawyers, all prosecution lawyers and judges and presstitutes benefit financially from the prolongation of the execution of the death warrant
