McCarthy loses sixth vote for speaker as House remains deadlocked

WASHINGTON — For a second consecutive day, a band of 20 ultraconservative rebels blocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy from winning the speaker’s gavel, just hours after former President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to back him and "close the deal."

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, six votes were held on the House floor to choose a speaker; each time, the rebels stuck together and voted for someone else, denying McCarthy the 218 votes he needed to win.

With both McCarthy allies and foes deeply dug in, it ensures that chaos will reign in the House for the foreseeable future under the new GOP majority.

During the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots on Wednesday, McCarthy — a California Republican who has served in leadership for the past 14 years — received support from more than 90% of the 222 GOP members. Earlier in the day, he was nominated by Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus who warned his fellow conservatives that their opposition will end up hurting their cause.

"We're on the precipice of such a destructive argument today. I plead with all— all of my Republican colleagues, let cooler, more rational heads prevail. Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House," Davidson said.

But the McCarthy foes showed no signs of backing down. In the three votes Wednesday, they rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds, a Black Florida conservative who won his second term in November.

Firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., nominated her fellow Freedom Caucus colleague, Donalds, saying she was not swayed by Trump — "my favorite president" — calling her to tell her to "knock this off."

"The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'sir, you do not have the votes and it’s time to withdraw,'" Boebert said of Trump to scattered boos.

Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next the next leader of our global criminal enterprise Speaker of the House, Davidson said.

Adding, "for crying out loud lets be reasonable." "How's 3 million in unmarked bills grab ya?"

McCarthy should let his ego deflate and just go.

How is it chaos if nothing is happening? How is it chaos if government is deadlocked? Sounds like Liberty!

I doubt we would be here had the red wave occurred.

McCarthy needs to step aside. For the good of the country. To show bipartisanship. To bring about unity.
/s

It’s time. Step aside, Kevin. It’s over. The uniparty has lost this time. By the way, how long before Paul Ryan steps up to a microphone to tell us what a disgrace this is?

The GOP throwing in with the Democrats on that horrible budget ticked off an awful lot of people, and not just Republicans. This is why there is such resistance to McCarthy - Trump can't do anything about that since he is on the outside looking in.

Personally, it could stay locked for two years. I’m tired of media and everyone tired of this already. A hundred years ago, they could take days, no one noticed, no one cares. Media now driving this for the news cycle. Let them stew on it and let politics take its course. If I were still living in DC I’d be up in the galleries watching.

One positive outcome from these deadlocked votes is that nothing else is getting done, legislation wise. That’s a win for America.

“Chaos” is a favorite word of the lickspittle media, used, of course, against conservatives only. There is not chaos, but a relatively orderly process, if a futile one, of voting for speaker. Any disorder is being caused by the Communist party with the babies, booze, and popcorn that they’ve brought to the floor.

It would just prove what many of us already know.
McCarthy would rather work with RATS that work it out within
his Conference.

McCarthy needs to go to a mail in ballot. He would surely win. Especially if he gets AZ election officials to count them. /sarc

This problem wouldn’t happen in North Korea. Anyone who held up the vote would be put in a damn prison.

And China? A person who didn’t vote ‘the right way’ would be hauled off by goons in front of the whole group.

Only in free countries do we have the ‘problem’ of debate and different opinions and people having to earn the right to lead. Maybe the MSNBC bimbos and pretentious ‘men’ should call in their FBI thugs to force ‘the right choice’...
