WASHINGTON — For a second consecutive day, a band of 20 ultraconservative rebels blocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy from winning the speaker’s gavel, just hours after former President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to back him and "close the deal."
Between Tuesday and Wednesday, six votes were held on the House floor to choose a speaker; each time, the rebels stuck together and voted for someone else, denying McCarthy the 218 votes he needed to win.
With both McCarthy allies and foes deeply dug in, it ensures that chaos will reign in the House for the foreseeable future under the new GOP majority.
During the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots on Wednesday, McCarthy — a California Republican who has served in leadership for the past 14 years — received support from more than 90% of the 222 GOP members. Earlier in the day, he was nominated by Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus who warned his fellow conservatives that their opposition will end up hurting their cause.
"We're on the precipice of such a destructive argument today. I plead with all— all of my Republican colleagues, let cooler, more rational heads prevail. Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House," Davidson said.
But the McCarthy foes showed no signs of backing down. In the three votes Wednesday, they rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds, a Black Florida conservative who won his second term in November.
Firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., nominated her fellow Freedom Caucus colleague, Donalds, saying she was not swayed by Trump — "my favorite president" — calling her to tell her to "knock this off."
"The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'sir, you do not have the votes and it’s time to withdraw,'" Boebert said of Trump to scattered boos.

He is not even entitled to a vacant Janitors cubicle somewhere in the nether reaches of the house basement.
Since he is not currently an elected government official he is a CIVILIAN and the Sergent at arms / Capital police should arrest him and escort him to jail awaiting trial.

Notice they use it like an epithet!..................
McCarthy has made a ‘deal’......................
Hannity is a fraud.......................
Sounds like McCarthy and the Rinos need to stop the chaos they created with the nomination of an unelectable speaker and cooperate and pick a compromise candidate.
McCarthy has made a ‘deal’.
I knew he would. He’s that determined to be Speaker.
He put himself over country, over Party and over principle.
That tells me he’s no better than Pelosi.
In fact he may be worse.
She never pretended to be something she wasn’t.
At least with her you know what you were dealing with.
With McCarthy, flip-flopping like a fish on a hook, you never know..................
The consistent reason they give for their rush to install McCarthy as House leader is that it's taking too much time and that it's important to "get on with the peoples' business."
Condemning these honorable members of their own party who are committed to taking a few extra days -- if not a week or more -- to clarify matters about how House business will be conducted over the next two years is not only despicable, it conflicts directly with the principles of representative government; thus, their reasoning has failed and will continue to fail to persuade.
They won’t.
McCarthy made a ‘deal’ for the votes he needs during the night.
He will be Speaker and will exact his revenge.........................
I absolutely agree...
“The numbers were swayed between the vote House Republican Leader months ago, and the vote for Speaker in Jan. Again, that was BECAUSE Trump ENDORSED McCarthy for Speaker IN NOVEMBER. 33 Republicans opposed McCarthy for Republican Leader. ONLY 20 opposed him for Speaker.”
A specious assertion.
The omnibus bill issue is huge. The budget issue is huge.
The federal enslavement of America is huge.
The IRS gestapo issue is huge. Why 88,000 armed IRS agents?
My sense is the uniparty will unite to silence these rebels. The military/industrial/tech complex (MITC) is now international and global. Is Lee Harvey Oswald around the corner for the MITC if the rebels don’t get in line eventually?
So do you want idiotic rules like the one that says 5 random reps can challenge the Speakership and thereupon force nitwit vote after nitwit vote?
It’s the way it’s always been until Queen Pelosi.
Our Speaker must be held accountable.
If McCarthy gets elected speaker, it will be because the democrats will vote for him.
Or someone gets threatened
It was only one representative in the past. It worked just fine for decades. Why? Because they weren’t keeping reps under the thumb of leadership and not allowing them access, not even allowing them to see bills they vote on until the last minute.
Spot on.
I read a headline that the GOP may use the “nuclear option”. I am in a phase of ignoring news about Rino threats, and didn’t read it.
I’ve no idea what that may or may not mean. Just surprise me.
I’m watching actions at this point and having to filter just about everything else. 🥴

First, some promises you can break. But other such as the appointment to committees, chairmanships, those are done deals. Those are EXTREMELY important concessions.
Second, 200 congressmen including some very conservative ones I know are sticking with him. He must have some skillz as I mention in my thread.
