McCarthy loses sixth vote for speaker as House remains deadlocked

WASHINGTON — For a second consecutive day, a band of 20 ultraconservative rebels blocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy from winning the speaker’s gavel, just hours after former President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to back him and "close the deal."

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, six votes were held on the House floor to choose a speaker; each time, the rebels stuck together and voted for someone else, denying McCarthy the 218 votes he needed to win.

With both McCarthy allies and foes deeply dug in, it ensures that chaos will reign in the House for the foreseeable future under the new GOP majority.

During the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots on Wednesday, McCarthy — a California Republican who has served in leadership for the past 14 years — received support from more than 90% of the 222 GOP members. Earlier in the day, he was nominated by Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus who warned his fellow conservatives that their opposition will end up hurting their cause.

"We're on the precipice of such a destructive argument today. I plead with all— all of my Republican colleagues, let cooler, more rational heads prevail. Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House," Davidson said.

But the McCarthy foes showed no signs of backing down. In the three votes Wednesday, they rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds, a Black Florida conservative who won his second term in November.

Firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., nominated her fellow Freedom Caucus colleague, Donalds, saying she was not swayed by Trump — "my favorite president" — calling her to tell her to "knock this off."

"The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'sir, you do not have the votes and it’s time to withdraw,'" Boebert said of Trump to scattered boos.

And yet, Trump was the one and only Republican President that got Roe V. Wade overturned....

Because Abortion should be a State issue, period. Then Miss Lindsey opens her hole and suggested a Nationwide Ban, which is just as unconstitutional as Roe v. Wade was.

“How does it look that Hakim might be better than you?”

If Hakim becomes speaker, it will only be BECAUSE the RINOs vote for him.

Don’t blame conservatives (preemptively even) for something that RINOs might do.

Re: PDJT endorsement of KM
Haven’t we learned yet that his endorsement, the spotlight, is the quick sand?
😉

Let the conservatives nominate DJT.
The liberal heads would really explode...

Just saying...

Good, let’s hope it lasts a couple years...

Exactly - R's do as much damage as D's, so let both sides stagnate.

If he agrees with the Tucker Manifesto (Total public release of January 6th files and videos, and a New Church Committee with Thomas Massie as Chair), then put it in writing!

Has he been asked to do that? Will that increase his vote total?

Absolutely. Mt question would be... If the House is not Constitutionally in session as a new congress, I wonder if this would also legally hold up the new Senate and in turn also the Administration? Rendering them all legally powerless until this is solved? Can they even do any Congressional business without the House because it is in limbo?

To tie up all three because of this would be fantastic!

>> One thing about this whole thing surprises me.......Why Trump’s endorsement of McCarthy did not have more of an effect (which was none) than it did. Would have expected it would have at least brought a handful of reps over to McCarthy. Go figure. <<

I think Trump's endorsement of McCarthy DID sway a HANDFUL of reps over to McCarthy's side. Key word being "handful".

The vote for House Republican Leader was 188 for Kevin McCarthy, and 31 for Andy Biggs.

The latest vote for House Speaker was 201 for Kevin McCarthy, and 20 for Byron Donalds.

Seems like at least 10 or 11 Republicans who DIDN'T want McCarthy as party leader, never-the-less held their nose and voted for him for Speaker.

Yeah, it worked out so awesomely with slavery. Darn those Republicans and their nationwide ban with the 13th amendment. We should have listened to Stephen A. Douglas. Guy was obviously on the right side of history with that "send it back to the states" stuff!

If the dimocrats were smart they’d have a sit down with Mac and say “we can throw 20 votes your way if you give us this or that”. They know they cant win but they can sure get a YUGE wish granted if they so choose.

I really don’t care about this whole drama, and I suspect the overwhelming majority of Americans don’t care, either.

If you put Jim Jordan in, he would take a dive for Kevin. So that would leave our third nominee, Donalds. McCarthy vs. Donalds. Tyrus as surrogate for McCarthy, wielding a Greg as his weapon.
