Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has slammed Republican members of Congress who are opposed to electing Representative Kevin McCarthy as the next speaker.
Gingrich, a Republican, told Fox News' Sean Hannity on Tuesday that the 20 GOP members who voted against McCarthy were taking "the conference hostage" and appeared to compare them to "terrorists."

McCarthy supporters are calling this demand tyranny. They are saying that it gives any single member the power to throw the chamber into chaos.
Conservatives like Byron Donalds argues that this was the rule for a hundred years before Pelosi removed it when she took over after John Boehner was removed via the vacate motion. Donalds asks "why do we want to continue operating under Pelosi's rules?"
Donalds also says that the rule was only used twice when it was in place, so why should a Speaker who is effectively working within his caucus worry about that rule? He also argues that it is the right of each member of the House to question the ability of the Speaker to continue to lead.
So there we are. I think this is the hill that McCarthy is willing to die on, the Motion to Vacate the Chair. He's afraid of his caucus, and he doesn't want them to have the power to call for his removal if he reverts to establishment norms after winning.

Has McCarthy agreed to re-instate the option to move to vacate the chair? As far as I know, if he did not agree to that, we’re stuck with him for the next 2 years.
Out here, Young Kim and Michelle Steele are very squishy, but a vote for Jeffries would likely be political suicide, given the conservative domination of the GOP in Orange County, Calif. Upstate, David Valdao might be someone Jeffries could pick off; and way up the coast is Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.). Both of them voted to impeach President Trump.
Shouldn’t he be in Rome with Callista?
There was a time when Newt was someone to listen to.
He went downhill from there.
Today’s he’s just out to lunch.
Its time for Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Thanks. That is insightful information.
Piss on Newt and the GOP if voting against their candidate makes you a terrorist. That BS is right out of BiteMe’s jello brain.
Lots of bridges being burned right now by the establishment. I see no way forward for the GOP to win any more seats in Congress in 24 or the presidency.
We are seeing what the establishment of both parties and the deep state really think of representative government and it’s disturbing and disgusting.
I agree but don’t give up on Trump in ‘24.
Is that old fart still trying to be relevant?
Has McCarthy agreed to re-instate the option to move to vacate the chair?

According to a TV interviews with Gingrich and others saying the same thing. before 2nd vote I think.
“ why should a Speaker who is effectively working within his caucus worry about that rule”
Because McTurd plans to step on conservatives
Shut up Newt.
That means there is a call for a new vote for Speaker, which is better than this terrible clown show.
But persist with this idiotic purism, and what will happen is some of the members have reportedly said if they don’t get their chairmanships and committed assignments guaranteed they will vote for Jefferies.
It not about McCarthy in the House, its petty squabbles about chairmanships and committed assignments. Only outside of the House - here is it about fitness of McCarthy
If McCarthy "plans to step on conservatives" as you say, then we have to believe that there will be five votes to motion to vacate the chair.
I think that at some point this has become so personal for some people that they are unwilling to move off of their initial positions vis a vis McCarthy. They might have for someone else, but not McCarthy, only because it's McCarthy they'd be compromising to.
In that sense, it's a little like some behaviors I've seen here on FR, where some posters just refuse to concede a point, especially when that concession is to particular other FR members. It's sad to see that same behavior metastasize in the House, but then I suppose it really is a reflection of the hot tempers of the people after all.

Yeah saw that last night on TV - she’s a piece of work. He rejected it because she wanted some committee or chairmanship.
It’s never the wrong time to do the right thing.

Except when it isn’t.
I don’t like it any more that any one else, but the clown show has got to stop - the GOP is becoming a laughing stock, proving it is unfit to govern.
He has promised them everything they asked for, except the guaranteed assignments, reportedly.
Well it is historic and will go don’t in history books, but I cannot speak for your short term memory.
Becoming? That train left the station a long time ago.
So which Republicans do you see switching their vote to Jefferies? Don’t use scare tactics. Name the Republican that will vote for a Democrat Speaker. Otherwise, your threat is empty.

Its the crowd around Gaetz. Its not my threat!! Its been reported elsewhere. So stop trolling.
