Right-wing anti-vaxxers pushed a debunked conspiracy blaming COVID shots after NFL player Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field on Monday.
Hamlin, a 24-year-old safety for the Buffalo Bills, suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field after a scary hit to his chest during the Monday Night Football matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Players surrounded Hamlin as he received CPR for about nine minutes before being taken off the field in an ambulance. The game was postponed and Hamlin was taken to a local hospital.
"Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in the Buffalo Bills' game versus the Cincinnati Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition," the Bills said in a statement early Tuesday.
The scary moment led to an outpouring of support and prayers for the young second-year player and an online toy drive fundraiser launched by Hamlin quickly raised more than $3 million in donations in the hours after his collapse. But some right-wing anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists used the incident to stoke a widely debunked claim that the COVID vaccine is causing young, healthy athletes to suddenly collapse.

Sorry, Otto but even that baseline is too high for the current leadership.
He may well have had the same condition that caused me to die on the basketball court Thanksgiving weekend of 2018- atrial fibrillation. The Grace of God and prompt medical attention pulled me through, and I pray it will do the same for him. A few days of induced coma will tell the tale.
If it was indeed the vax, it is not likely we will ever be told so.

If death is absence of cardiac function and respiration, he did. They were able to get him restarted in that limited window of opportunity that permits survival.
That’s true, but generally speaking, we don’t pronounce people dead as soon as the heart stops. It is after trying and trying to restart it, and not getting anywhere that they make a pronouncement of death. The death announcement online was premature.

Here’s the earliest known young athlete heart attack death due to the covid vaccine:
A high school baseball player in New Jersey died over the weekend after he was struck in the chest by a pitch during an evening practice with his all-star travel team.
Thomas Adams, a 16-year-old sophomore at Garfield High School, was playing catcher when a pitch missed his glove and slammed into his chest protector.
The teen stood up and said “I can’t breathe,” before collapsing into cardiac arrest, Fox New York reported. Local paramedics arrived and rushed the boy to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical center in Paterson, where he later died.
Adams’ father, Thomas P. Adams, said the boy had no known medical conditions and local news reports said he was wearing all his catchers gear, including the chest protector, at the time of the freak accident.
“I go in the hospital, all these doctors are trying to pump him back to life. I just sat there in shock,” Adams’ father told CBS. “I mean how could this be? Thirty minutes ago he was alive and the weird thing is he had all the protection so it’s…there’s no line to the reason.”
“It’s just like my best friend is gone.” he said. “I just dropped him off and how he’s gone.”
Police collected the boy’s chest protector, knee pads and catchers mask as part of the investigation and were waiting for a report from the medical examiner to determine the cause of death, The Bergen Record reported.
The boy’s father said he wanted to know whether the gym the team was practicing in had a defibrillator.
Several student athletes have been injured and killed in similar incidents in the past decade.
In 2006, Steven Domalewski, 12, fell into a coma after he was hit in the chest by a line drive during a baseball game in Wayne, N.J.
Doctors determined that Steven suffered commotio cordis, a potentially fatal disturbance of the heart’s rhythm caused by sudden, blunt force to the chest. Domalewski survived but was left unable to walk or speak.
In 2004, a lacrosse player at Cornell University, George Boiardi, died after being hit by a shot by an opposing player during a game in Ithaca, N.Y.
It is believed that Boiardi died from commotio cordis, and the incident led the NCAA to call for defibrillators to be on site during games.
The teen’s father said that young Tommy loved the Yankees and had overcome learning disabilities to improve his grades.
“He worked hard to get to his goals,” Adams told the Record. “He used to say, ‘I’m going to be Derek Jeter.’ He read books about Derek Jeter, reading a chapter on how he worked his butt off playing baseball.”
A wake was scheduled for Monday in Garnerville, N.Y., and Garfield High School said it was providing grief counseling services for students.
A funeral will take place tomorrow and the procession will pass by the high school so that students can pay their respects.
“He was a beautiful kid,” Tim Adams, the boy’s uncle, told the Record. “Everybody loved him.”
