Unless he has a track record with shrinks, prosecutors will say his behavior changed after he was captured, booked and put in a cell. Good luck to the expert witness who has to diagnose him as insane.

Kinda lame for the Brit press - most folks on FR following this story have known for the last couple of days how the investigators tied the crime scene DNA to him.
If he tried anything on the prison guards, they would throw him down on the floor so hard that it would crack the concrete.

The law prohibits any consideration of a defendant’s insanity in a criminal trial. Testimony is restricted to issues of mens rea and other elements of the offense charged. The court, however, is ordered by law to consider mental illness as a factor in sentence selection.
mens rea is huge loophole, but I doubt it will prevail. The sooner he swings, the better.
