The billionaire co-founder of Home Depot is slamming what he says is a poor work ethic among laborers today, claiming that “nobody gives a damn” about job performance in the present-day economy.
“'Nobody works. Nobody gives a damn,” Bernie Marcus told the Financial Times in an interview this week.
In a jeremiad against what he claimed were insufficiently motivated workers, Marcus mimicked them: "Just give it to me. Send me money. I don’t want to work - I’m too lazy, I’m too fat, I’m too stupid."
The business tycoon claimed to the Times that his highly successful hardware chain would never realize the same level of growth and popularity in the modern economy.
“We would end up with 15, 16 stores,” he said. “I don’t know that we could go further.

Its the end game of printed, fiat, Federal Reserve money, and the massive government debt and woke social-engineering it supports.
I read comments posted to this story online and there seemed to be a general consensus that this company didn’t pay well. Sounds like this 1%er is pissed that he can’t force workers into his substandard wage jobs.
Chain employers don’t give a s___ about their employees and the employees don’t give a s___ about their employers.
There are a few, but in a LOT of cases he is right on point. We see help wanted signs everywhere. None of them are less than $15/hr with benefits.
Alas, Bernie is right. Another example is Twitter’s San Fran office, which has begun to stink — literally — because Musk fired the striking janitors and the genius snowflakes have no idea how to clean up after themselves.
I think you’re right about fiat and the Fed. We’re headed for some sort of universal basic income (UBI).
He’s just mad because government handouts aren’t being spent at his store as much as, say, Walmart.
“‘Too lazy, too fat, too stupid’: Home Depot founder slams workers in modern economy”
Certainly true for Americans, but I’ll put up the quality of my mostly-Mexican(or similar) built house against anything I’ve seen from the UAW, for example.
On the flip side of that. Companies no longer care about employees. They will move work off-shore if at all possible.
I’m starting to like Home Despot more.
This, and years ago railing against universal commieCare.
Back in the good old days up in Bristol Bay AK during the summer runs of sockeye, guys hire Vietnamese deckhands for cheap, like $500 for the season (which often grossed $100-200K).
They were not allowed in the boat cabin and had to sleep and cook in the boat fish hold. There was no shortage of Vietnamese deckhands.
So cry me a river for these poor spoiled, soft, wimps that pass for kids these days.
He’s right.
Whenever I go to Home depot, I leave reminiscing about old hardware stores where the workers could answer questions and find the right items. They were helpful. Now, they’re only good for stocking shelves. Ask them a question and they read a label which I am quite capable of doing myself.
Sigh.... I miss the old days.
I think he's covering way to much territory. Some still care, and do fine work.. The others are too busy with the bong....
That sounds familiar.
In the sweet old country
Where I come from
Nobody ever works
And nothing gets done
We hang fire
Could be. But why does he and Home Depot exist in the first place then?
I assume HD has to pay similar to competitors? Otherwise why not quit and go to one of them to do the same work? My experience is the minions in Menards, Lowes, and HD are all pretty interchangeable, although Menards has totally avoided self checkout.
Roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Lay around the shack ’til the mail comes back
And I’ll roll in my sweet baby’s arms
I ain’t gonna work on the railroad
I ain’t gonna work on the farm
Lay down the shack ’til the mail train comes back
And I’ll roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Now where was you last Friday night
While I was lying in jail
Walking the streets with another man
Wouldn’t even go my bail
I know you parents don’t like me
They drove me away from your door
If I had my life to live over
I’d never go there any more
Roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Roll in my sweet baby’s arms
Lay around the shack ’til the mail comes back
And I’ll roll in my sweet baby’s arms
