The new adult-oriented HBO show will reimagine several characters from the Mystery Inc. gang, including Velma, who will be of South Asian descent....Scooby-Doo himself will not make an appearance in the series.

Velma has already come out as a lesbian:

Self-important assholes ruining a perfectly good children’s TV show.
And, just like that, the outrage around cultural appropriation went up in smoke.
If it follows the ‘gay commandments’ and ‘talks about gay and nothing but gay all the time’ its fate will parallel that of the ‘Ellen’ sitcom after she publicly came out.

Velma has already been seriously R-34’ed, and *not* as a lesbian, at least most of the time.

When the first live-action/CGI Scooby Doo came out, they cast Fred as an Hispanic* and no-one said “accept him or you’re a bigot” and no-one complained. That’s how you get to a “South Asian” Velma. (”South Asian?” Seriously? Not Indian, not “Asian,” but “South Asian?” As if we need to make sure everyone understands she’s not Chinese or Korean, but maybe Iranian?)
As for her being a Lesbian, if that’s evident, you’re probably a twisted individual. The strange thing is that it makes for a fairly demeaning stereotype, given the way Velma is depicted in contrast to the hyper-feminine Daphne.
And yes, Lesbians aren’t happy that Velma is Lesbian; they demand Daphne be one, also.
It was understandable that baby boomers would want to hang on to their childhood television shows. That we’re still doing it when boomers are already senior citizens (or almost) suggests a real lack of imagination.
Forgot the asterisk. Meant to note that Freddie Prinze, Jr. is only 1/4 Hispanic, but come on, his Dad was Chico.
They should just have made him a cow.
Mindy Kaling is a South Asian. What a coincidence. She also has a child but refuses to name the father.
You know, this could have been an excellent origin story. Of the Scooby-Doo characters, Velma was the one who was central to the team with an intriguing backstory.
South Asian = Paki = bad
She may not know who the father is.
So stoner Shaggy is now black, and formerly hot Velma is a dumpy lesbian

It’s normal that fictional characters, once created, outlive their creators. Why did we think TV would be any different? What’s perverse is the way Hollywood seems to be incapable of anything other than subverting the originals. When Shakespeare rewrote Pyramis and Thisbe, he updated them into Renaissance Italy, but the Elizabethan author didn’t see it necessary to pummel us over the head with the characterization of Romeo and Juliet as Protestants, doomed to die because their Catholic parents didn’t understand their unconditional election.
