So, why provoke them directly when the assignment does not require this?

...that said, realize that the apology gives them the ammunition to destroy you. The professor accepted guilt - don’t do that. You reinforce and articulate why you SHOULD do what you did and specifically state that you’re NOT going to apologize for it.
