~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas

TXlaughlinafb2

Laughlin Air Force Base is a facility of the United States Air Force located east of Del Rio, Texas. Laughlin AFB, the largest pilot training base in the US Air Force, is home to the 47th Flying Training Wing of the Air Education and Training Command and the 96th Flying Training Squadron of the Air Force Reserve Command. On weekdays, the airfield sees more takeoffs and landings than any other airport in the country.

TXlaughlinafb3

The 47th Flying Training Wing has been active at Laughlin Air Force Base since September 1, 1972. In the nearly fifty years that it has been operating at Laughlin, the 47th Flying Training Wing has trained more than 15,000 pilots for the United States and its allies, the wing's mission since 1972 has been to train pilots for the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and allied nation air forces.

Today the wing utilizes the T-6A Texan II, T-38C Talon, and T-1A Jayhawk aircraft to perform this mission, while striving, every day, to build combat-ready Airmen, leaders, and pilots.

TXlaughlinafb6

The 47th Operations Group is responsible for training U.S. Air Force pilots under the Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Program. The 47th OG provides management, control, standardization and evaluation of all aspects of flying training operations and airfield management at Laughlin.

The group consists of four flying training squadrons, an operations support squadron and a student squadron.

Earning the wings of an Air Force pilot is extremely challenging. During the 52-week training period, each student pilot flies nearly 200 hours in the T-6A and either the T-38 or T-1A aircraft. Flying is supplemented by almost 60 hours in aircraft simulators and more than 500 hours in the classroom.

The 85th Flying Training Squadron, Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, along with the 434th FTS, conducts the T-6A Texan II flying training portion of Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training. The 60 instructor pilots of the 85th FTS train over 150 students annually, flying over 26,000 sorties and 35,000 hours.

Beating as One
Read: Genesis 1:1, 27–31

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

Stories have captivated humans since the dawn of creation—functioning as a way to pass down knowledge long before written language existed. We’ve all known the delight of hearing or reading a story and being immediately engaged by such opening lines as “Once upon a time.” The power of a story appears to extend beyond merely enjoyment: when we listen to a story together, our heartbeats seem to synchronize! Though our individual heartbeats vary over the course of a day, and might only match another’s coincidentally, new research indicates our hearts may all fall into the same rhythm when we hear the same story at the same time.

God begins telling us His story with the words, “In the beginning” (Genesis 1:1). From the moment Adam and Eve first drew breath (v. 27), God has used that unfolding story to shape not just our individual lives but also—and perhaps more importantly—our collective lives as His children. Through the Bible—the most magnificent nonfiction story ever recorded—our hearts as believers in Jesus are joined together as people set apart for His purposes (1 Peter 2:9).

In response, may our hearts beat in shared rhythm, delighted by the Author’s creative works. And may we share His story with others, declaring “his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples” (Psalm 96:3), inviting them to become part of it too.Kirsten Holmberg

What part of the story of the Bible most captivates you? With whom can you share it?

Thank You, Father, for showing me who You are through the Bible and making me one of Your own.

Good evening, radu...are you starting to warm up?

I just walked out on the deck to feed the ducks and almost fell...it is a sheet of ice. And the sherbet that has been staying out there is VERY soft. A hasty rearranging of the freezer and in it went.

Trying to throw corn was slip ‘n slide. Gotta put my spikies on to venture forth again. And thank goodness I don’t have to drive anywhere for the next few days. ICY!!!

LOL! Just starting on work stuff...instead I did some fun reading, calendar updating for the new year, and all little side trips that came along. A lazy day.

How are your pump houses? Your outside car?

Hey there, Kathy.

It warmed up just a little bit today ..... hit the freezing mark. LOL That’s a whole lot better than the 11 degrees we had a couple of days ago. A much better warm-up ahead through the week.

Be careful!!! Wear those spikies when you go out. I’m not surprised it’s icy at your house. The snow on top of the ice on Lake Hood is shiny tonight so it’s apparently icy too.

Aaaaaah, GOOD! A little “you” time today. Bet it felt good too.

The heat’s fine in the pump houses and I think I’ll just stay in tonight and not worry about them.
As for the station wagon, out of curiosity I decided to see if the doors would open and they did. And the interior light came on. Will it start? YES!!!!! The frigid weekend didn’t freeze the water in the battery and didn’t drain it. Now I don’t have to drag the battery charger to the house from the garage to charge it up this week. WHEW!

Life is good. It looks like I got through this mess in decent shape.

Howdy, luvie.

How was your day?

It was a little warmer here but not by much. A little snow came through this evening and gave us a dusting, I just realized when I looked out to see what the temp is.
