LOL, that old hobby horse. The Ukrainians passed laws twice to recognize the Russian language in Donbas and grant them autonomy. It was the Russians who did not abide by the agreements by blocking local elections conducted by the Ukrainian government. Again, there would have been no need for the Minsk's agreements of Russia had not invaded in the first place.
—”What really galls me about these anti Ukraine folks is they are rhetorical bomb throwers.”
Their function is not an attempt to win the hearts and minds for Putin, but to sow dissent.
Victoria Nuland & Co.
It is perfectly easy and legitimate to hold these views simultaneously. I pondered, why is it so hard to believe this to be impossible?
Then I recalled, I read that during the Cold War, some conservatives privately envied the Soviets' ability to suppress dissent. I can't find any documentation nowadays. I'm an empiricist, so I thought maybe it was just conjecture.
However, reading the stunning support by some FReepers for Russia and her "defense of traditional values" despite silence on the execution of political opponents and keeping divorce and abortion legal (and more prevalent than in America), I realized my error...it's not hard for them to believe - they simply gave up on America and have adopted Russia and her tactics to be on the "winning team."
They still have lots of them...should aim for the half dozen or so newly upgraded Backfires. The rest are back at the factory undergoing refurbishment/modernization.
Maybe we’ve been there before...
With previous strikes on Engles, they have put a serious dent in their nuclear triad. They are WEAK on bombers. So far the little drone strikes from the "Ukes" would be like taking out 2-3 B2 Spirit Bombers at Whiteman AFB, a couple of B1s at Dyess, and a few B52s at WhynotMinot.
Why all this “Putin”, “Putinista” business?
This war is about a conflict of vital national interests. No Russian leader, Putin or his successor, is going to abandon their own view of Russia’s interests in this matter.
In fact, it is very likely that if US interference in this war forces Putin out, the result won’t be peace, but a much wider war with the dead maybe in the millions.
I mean, argue about the policy, sure. But those of us who support noninterference in the internal affairs of Russia and Ukraine don’t do it out of any feelings for Putin, but rather how we view our own national interest.
It looks like cruise missiles were loaded and ready on the TU-95 MS that was hit and were detonated. Big bang for the done buck.
The so called “non interventionists” said the same thing when Hitler was bombing London and were hysterical about lend lease.
At the same time, aside from moral support for Ukraine as the object of Russia's actions, America owes Ukraine zero. I don't want a penny to go from the US govt to Ukraine, no any ordnance and certainly no soldiers.
Individuals who want to support Ukraine can do what they want with their own money...they can get Zelnsky's Venmo and send him some cash for all I care.
The poison here is an Russian irredentism that denies its neighbors a right to self determination and national identity. Russia fancies itself a super power and wants an empire.
Putin and his surrogates have called Ukrainians “Russian” and promised to erase their nation from the earth. Unsurprisingly, most of Russia’s neighbors don’t want to be serfs and slaves of the Kremlin. Thus, here we are. Russia must be defeated and it’s imperial ambitions bled out in the mud of Ukraine. Anything less will just continue Russia’s war of choice to a later date.
I believe in spheres of interest.
If China overthrew the government of Mexico and proposed Mexico’s entrance into a military alliance with China including forces on the Rio Grande, I would support 100% the conquest and re-organization of Mexico along lines favorable to our national interests.
If I support that, I also support Russia’s right to define its national interests, Putin has nothing to do with it.
Well said.
“You ain’t gonna like the nuclear war you want so badly.”
If it comes, the “you” you speak of won’t know what happened and very few of the “others” will either. But they’ll be gone when they take enough rads and/or the food and water is contaminated. Radiation poisoning is a painful and miserable way to die. And the people that caused it won’t even know it is happening.
