Granny Whale
Read: Psalm 71:15–24

My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds. Psalm 71:15

An orca whale, who researchers have named “Granny,” apparently knew the importance of her role in the life of her “grandbaby whale.” The young whale’s mother had recently died, and the orphaned whale was not yet old enough to thrive without protection and support. Granny, though in her eighties (or older), came alongside to teach him what he needed to know to survive. Granny corralled some fish for the younger whale instead of consuming them herself, so he would not only have a meal but would also learn what to eat and where to find the salmon he’d need to live.

We too have the distinct honor and joy of passing on what we know—we can share about the wonderful works and character of God with those coming after us. The aging psalmist asks God to allow him to “declare [His] power to the next generation” (Psalm 71:18). He earnestly wishes to share with others what he knows of God—His “righteous deeds” and “saving acts”—that we need to flourish (v. 15).

Even if we don’t have the gray hairs of old age (v. 18), declaring how we’ve experienced the love and faithfulness of God can benefit someone on their journey with Him. Our willingness to share that wisdom might just be what that person needs to live and thrive in Christ even in adversity (v. 20).Kirsten Holmberg

Who has nurtured your relationship with God? Who needs your wisdom today?

Dear Father, thank You for sending me wisdom through those who’ve walked ahead of me. May I do the same for others in Your power and love.

I grew up with this version, which features most of Clement Moore's original poem with some additions by Ken Darby, whose vocal group, the Ken Darby Singers, backed Bing Crosby on several of his hits including "White Christmas."

It almost didn't see the light of day. Fred Waring and the gang had to race to complete it before a scheduled strike by the American Federation of Musicians would deprive him of his instrumentalists. They got the production into the can the day before the strike began, to the delight of untold millions, including yours truly, over the next eight decades. It has since become a fixture in America's Christmas songbook.

A Visit from St. Nicholas ('Twas the Night Before Christmas)--Waring's Pennsylvanians, with the Swingerettes & Gordon Goodman (1942)

HELLO ALL!

“Twas The Night Before Christmas”...THE CLASSIC OF CLASSICS, AS MUCH AS ST. NICK HIMSELF, OR MISTLETOE, OR EGGNOG. DIDN’T REALIZE IT’S 200 YEARS OLD!!!

NOW, FOR SOMETHING MORE RECENT. THERE ARE MANY WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS MOVIES, FROM “MIRACLE ON 34TH ST.”, TO “SCROOGED” (HOW “IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE”, EVER GOT INTO THE MIX IS BEYOND ME, EVEN MORE SO, HOW “DIE HARD”, GOT INCLUDED, BUT, FOR TONIGHT AT LEAST, THEY DON’T COUNT!).

SO, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE?...OR MOVIES...WHY HAVE JUST ONE?

MY VERY, VERY FAVORITE, NOTHING ELSE COMES CLOSE (ALTHOUGH THERE ARE OTHER GOOD ONES), IS ALISTAIR SIM’S 1951 VERSION OF “A CHRISTMAS CAROL” (ALSO CALLED “SCROOGE”).

WHEN I WAS A KID THE MOST TERRIFYING THING I EVER SAW WAS THE SHROUDED GHOST OF CHRISTMAS FUTURE RAISE HIS ARM AND POINT HIS BONY FINGER TO THE GRAVEYARD! TO THIS DAY IT STILL CHILLS ME.

I WATCH THIS FILM EVERY YEAR, AND NEVER FIND IT ANYTHING BUT FRESH, NEW, HEART WRENCHING, AND ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

AND YOU? TO EACH OF YOU, WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE?

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus · Gary Hoey · Thomas Connor

My siblings and I probably drove our parents crazy singing this and other classics of the time constantly while riding too and from all the functions we got to go too. Fun times.

A bare inch of snow here but the chill should slow the bugs down next summer...
