While the pandemic prompted a well-documented exodus to, and development of, sleepy suburban and exurban towns, the Rosslyn Business Improvement District says it has identified a different Covid migration pattern.
About a quarter of Americans reported moving to cities where they could be within a 15-minute walk or bike ride of grocery stores, healthcare and parks, according to a national survey by the BID.
The survey also found 41% plan on moving to be within walking or biking distance of their preferred amenities — including coffee shops, schools and gyms — in the next one to three years. That’s in contrast with places that prioritize mobility by motor vehicle, with sidewalks and bike lanes as a relative afterthought.

All going according to plan. Moving people into the urban areas where we, the people, can be more easily be controlled.
Agreed. I already moved out away from a city and I plan to move even further away in the future.
That assumes that cities are being planned and they aren't. And it assumes that people are clear-headed about the practicality of where and how they live.
There are plenty of city planners around and they draw up plans and do a lot of talking, but for the most part, cities "evolve."
People don't want an hour's commute to their job. But that's what they have to put up with if they want a house they can afford. A lot of people in cities have this idea of white picket fences and that means unbearable commutes for a silly old-fashioned notion. I fell into the trap a long time ago in NYC. I know what an hour-and-a-half commute does to a person.
15-minute cities?
How about 7-minute abs?
Now don’t give me that look!!!
(hoping for that look gif)
LOL
Human beings just aren't that smart. And the government is about as competent as a steering committee consisting of inmates at an insane asylum.
If you doubt the stupidity of government take a look at the White House and Congress. Now imagine that same caliber of person has a permanent job in the government bureaucracy.
One big notable item missing from this list is “place of employment.”
I suspect most people who have a choice in the matter have no interest in working anywhere but home.
There are only certain parts of this country where people can expect weather to cooperate for 15-minute walks or bicycle rides; this concept has never taken off in the northeast, and I expect Mother Nature will ensure that it doesn’t.
Been there. In 2008 moved to walkable Golden Colorado to a condo. Lasted 6 years. Now in the country on 1.1 acres.
Total lie. This was the plan before the pandemic and how local governments (and Federal starting with Obama) were allocating development money. Now people can telecommute which threw a monkey wrench into their plans to herd us into controlled cities. They can let the plan dissolve so they are rewriting the narrative. Arlington is across the river from DC. Northern VA is doing infrastructure rebuilds to accommodate what they say will be a 40% increase in the areas population even most Fed Govt employees will be working frome permantly.
from home permanently.
I understand many are never returning to the office (and saving their employers a chunk of money by giving up part of their personal living space to do so), but I don’t think the work will permanently remain in Americans’ homes. The simple truth is these jobs are the easiest to outsource to Asia.
Much work done remotely is simple for an employer to monitor (and learn); those working this way the most are probably the most at risk. IMHO it is harder to protect your knowledge like this.
Interesting and you are likely right. Cusyomerservice jobs have already gone there. But, the Fed Govt jobs are mostly work from home now and are a good percentage of the workers/commuters in the DC area. Not sure if they can outsource these jobs to foreign countries. Also not sure what they are going to do with all the empty govt. buildings.
Moved from NYC to rural WV 21 years ago. Looks like I'm gonna have to move again before long. Exactly when and in which direction is now up to Someone else.
“urban planning” became at thing in the 60s. You could get a college major in it. A friend of mine did, had a 30 year career as an urban planner. In Portland Oregon. Last time I saw him I said “Hey, Great work.”
The “soft on crime” areas in cities are another measure to use fear to control law abiding citizens.
FTFY
But the Asians are becoming less comoditized as their birth rates plummet. The very same could be said of us Irish.
Psalm 37:11
But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
