Road Trip: Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas

Goodfellow Air Force Base is a nonflying United States Air Force base located in San Angelo, Texas, United States. As part of Air Education and Training Command, Goodfellow's main mission is cryptologic and intelligence training for the Air Force, Space Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, and Marine Corps. Military firefighters are also trained here as part of the 312th Training Squadron. It is the home of the 17th Training Wing. The base is named for World War I aviator First Lieutenant John J. Goodfellow Jr.

The 17th Training Wing is composed of the 17th Training Group, 517th Training Group, 17th Mission Support Group and 17th Medical Group.

The wing also provides support to Army, Navy and Marine Corps on-base units, as well as seven other partner organizations and Angelo State University's Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

The wing is also responsible for writing the Career Development Courses for the Air Force Specialty Codes, which it trains.

The 17th Civil Engineer Squadron is part of the 17th Mission Support Group

The 17th CES includes: Engineering, Fire Emergency Services, Installation Management, Operations, and Readiness & Emergency Management

The 17th CES is comprised of 176 civilian and military personnel operating and maintaining 2.8 million square feet of facilities valued at $1B and supporting a base population of 5,500 military, civilians and students. The 17th CES manages 241 privatized family housing units, 144 unaccompanied housing enlisted quarters, 170 base facilities and furnishings for 18 dormitories. The 17th CES executes an $11M operating budget and $85M design and construction program.

The 315th Training Squadron provides training in the following Air Force Specialty Code awarding courses:

1N031 & 5I0X1 All-Source Intelligence Analyst Apprentice Course
1N131 & 5I1X1 Geospatial Intelligence Analysis Course
1N731 Human Intelligence Specialist Course, Fort Huachuca, Arizona
1N831 & 5I8X1 Targeting Analyst Course
14N1 Intelligence Officer Course

No intent to distract from Goodfellow AFB, but I’ve got a question for former AF’ers. How many of you have been stationed at a Squadron, Group, Station, of Field?

I was stationed at Peterson Field, Lindsey Air Station, Lajes Field, and multiple Squadrons and Groups. Actually, was given a service number, not a variation of my SSAN. 68-76.
