THE AIRLIFT'S LEGACY
 

The most obvious result of this confrontation was the 40-year Cold War with the Soviet Union, which ebbed with the construction of the Berlin Wall, and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.  The US also forged a newfound friendship with Germany, its former foe, and established the Federal Republic of Germany as a result.  In addition, the North Atlantic Treaty organization (NATO) was formed as a result of the crisis. 

Less politically, our aircraft and airway system we enjoy today was developed and perfected as a result of the Berlin Airlift.  Ground Controlled Approach or GCA was greatly improved as a necessity for the aircraft to land in Berlin, and our air traffic control system is a direct development of that technology.  Loading procedures and maintenance procedures are greatly improved as a result, too.

More importantly, the Berlin Airlift demonstrated the military need for Air Transport in addition to Bombers and Fighters.  A result is the Air Mobility Command and aircraft like the C-141 Starlifter, the C-130 Hercules, the C-5 Galaxy, and our newest transport, the C-17 Globemaster III. 

All of these political and logistical ideas came as a result of the resolve of the US, Great Britain, France, and Germany to resist totalitarian tactics and wage a battle of air transport.  This battle saved over 2.5 million people without firing a single shot.  In a matter of fifteen months in 1948-49, world history was changed by the greatest humanitarian aviation event in history, the Berlin Airlift. 

MEMORIALS: The Airlift Memorial at Rhein Main Air Base, Frankfurt, and on Luftbruckenplatz at Tempelhof  Airport in Berlin.

Each prong represents one of the 3 air corridors used during "Operation Vittles", and the names of the US and British Airmen killed in the process are inscribed on the base of each.

31 Americans lost their lives during the Berlin Airlift, paying the ultimate price for the freedom of others.  Let that not be forgotten.

Several goals accomplished, but not the back stairs. I may tackle a couple of them on my lunch break tomorrow. Starting to clear stairs from the top is tricky. LOL! You can’t push the snow or the next step has more than when you started.

I had them almost cleared after the first storm, but the second and third storms filled them up again. 😂

No frost here...yet...and it might be too dry for any to form, but it is quite chilly. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be 63. Thursday the low has been lowered to 9. Quite a contrast.

Has the forecast changed so you might get to go to your Christmas party? Hope so!

Standing Firm by Faith

Read: Isaiah 7:1–9

If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all. Isaiah 7:9

Nokia became the world’s best-selling mobile phone company in 1998 and saw profits rise to nearly four billion dollars in 1999. But by 2011, sales were diminishing and soon the failing phone brand was acquired by Microsoft. One factor in Nokia’s mobile division failure was a fear-based work culture that led to disastrous decisions. Managers were reluctant to tell the truth about the Nokia phone’s inferior operating system and other design problems for fear of being fired.

King Ahaz of Judah and his people were fearful—“shaken, as the trees of the forest are shaken by the wind” (Isaiah 7:2). They knew that the kings of Israel and Aram (Syria) had allied, and their combined armies were marching to Judah to take it over (vv. 5–6). Although God used Isaiah to encourage Ahaz by telling him his enemies’ hostile plans would “not happen” (v. 7), the foolish leader fearfully chose to ally with Assyria and submit to the superpower’s king (2 Kings 16:7–8). He didn’t trust in God, who declared, “If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all” (Isaiah 7:9).

The writer of Hebrews helps us consider what it looks like to stand firm in faith today: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful” (10:23). May we press on and not “shrink back” (v. 39) as the Holy Spirit empowers us to trust in Jesus. — Tom Felten

Good evening, luvie...imagine the relief of just seeing supplies make it INTO Berlin.

Indeed, and then knowing that you and your family wouldn’t starve after all. It was a crazy time, and those guys performed the unthinkable!

Oooooo, your 63 tomorrow sounds soooo nice! We’re supposed to have mid to upper 40s the next few days. Rain most of the day Thursday quickly changing over to snow that night. one Nashville channel just said the afternoon temp Friday will be around 14! Waiting to hear what the usual channel I watch has to say. The had a ballgame on this afternoon and their programming has run behind since then. Their news just started.

It doesn’t look good for going anywhere Christmas Day or night. They don’t know, yet, how much snow to expect and hope to have a better handle on it by Tuesday.

It does sound great, but it will be such a contrast when the high is in the 40s 3 days later. Then 9 that night. Thank GOD there is no snow in the forecast. Of course, I’ll worry about the kitties and will be checking to see if their water has frozen so I can put warm water in the bowl and thaw it. They are tough, and have proven it, but I still get concerned.

I do NOT blame you for not wanting to get out if it’s going to be icy or snowy. Have you gotten everything you need so you don’t have to drive in it? Did you find the cat food you were looking for?
