California’s Reparations Task Force looks beyond slavery, turns to state discrimination

Looking beyond the abuses of enslavement, California’s Reparations Task Force this week dug into racist state policies of the 20th Century as it worked to quantify harms committed against Black communities.

The committee has already recommended that California provide financial reparations to descendants of enslaved people and Black Californians who can trace their ancestry in the state to the 19th Century.

Now it’s working on other questions, such as how to compensate people for unjust property takings by eminent domain, devaluation of Black businesses, housing discrimination and homelessness, over-policing and the disproportionate mass incarceration of Black people, and health harms.

“This conversation deserves a lot more, it’s the most important conversation that we’re going to have,” said task force member Monica Montgomery Steppe.

For unjust property takings, the task force suggested the state consider damages from 1920 to today. Committee members described how city governments razed several Black residential areas and replaced them with infrastructure, such as railroads and highways.

When it comes to the devaluation of Black businesses, the task force proposed to trace damage as early as 1900, which could include a lineage requirement.

In dealing with housing discrimination and homelessness, the task force advised lawmakers to revisit the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 and Home Owner’s Loan Corporation in 1937, which effectively created redlining, the blueprint to keep Black American to specific neighborhood with less resources.

Committee members suggest that mass incarceration and over-policing became heightened in 1970 due to the War on Drugs, an issue which continues to persist in the present day and economists agree.

The task force is continuing to analyze how compensation fits into the deliberation of reparations. It is still unclear on how reparations will be paid and measured to ensure the form of payment aligns with an estimate of damages.

I’d suggest that instead they get down on their knees and thank God for the white men who invented things that benefit all mankind. Things like:

battery,compass,calendar,clock,telephone,telegraph,telescope/microscope,
locomotive/steam engine,radio,television,light bulb,electric power generation/distribution, battery, electric motor, refrigerator,
typewriter,camera,automobile/internal combustion engin/diesel engine
airplane,dynamite,vacuum tubes/transistor/integrated circuit,
computer/personal computer,smartphone,printing press,X-Ray other imaging
anesthesia,Penicillin/ anitbiotics,polio vaccine,smallpox vaccine,
DNA fingerprinting,pacemaker,angioplasy,cardiac stent,ocean going ships,
space travel, water purification and sewers, map making,
mathematics of algebra, geometry, and calculus, the concept of money,
the concept of land ownership,

*** I’m open to corrections. ***

What happens when most of the white folks leave the state and are replaced with illegals? Fewer white folks to soak and the program will fall apart.

But who the hell looks at the long term effects of stupid ideas anyway.

The West Coast Asylum is going broke and still finding ways to flush the money they do have down the toilet. They are going to kill a lot of blacks with this much money. It will be a boon to the Mexican drug cartels though. I do believe that California does reek with discrimination as they are now claiming, but these “reparations” are going a bit overboard. I knew a Native American Indian guy who finally filed for “Agent Orange” money in the mid 90s. He received $77,000 for what Uncle Sam thought they owned him along with a monthly check. He had two daughters in college and never gave them or his ex-wife a penny. She was living on government assistance. He found himself a new significant other and he drank himself to death in less than a year.

If reparation is owed, it is the Democrat Party that owes it.

What happens when the black reparations lobby realizes that the Spaniards (the descendants of whom we first started calling "Hispanic") brought at least 15 times as many black slaves to America as the English did? (5 to 5.5 million vs 300K to 400K)

I want a refund for the portion of my property taxes that was allocated to schools.

“how city governments razed several Black residential areas and replaced them with infrastructure, such as railroads and highways.”

“Black residential areas” had a different name back in the day. Kind of like ‘Chinatown’ but different. Since city governments had to pay for the property razed, it only made sense to make the project in the cheapest-to-buy area. You don’t route a highway through the middle of millionaire’s row.

But if any minority has a claim, it would have to be the descendants of the Chinese who were banned from even owning property in California for many years. And while Congress voted reparations to Japanese-Americans who were interned I don’t recall California doing so, even though it was California politicians who urged the program.

Many don’t remember the reactions of many people ‘back east’ to the Watts riots. People couldn’t believe how nice Watts looked compared to ‘black residential areas’ in Chicago, NYC, StL, NJ etc., etc. Fact is, blacks in California, like most in California at the time, had things pretty good.

Bend over California as they're going to take it out your Wahzoo!

Look for taxes and fees, coming out the woodwork. I wouldn't be surprised if there were special retirement taxes for those having over a million during retirement as well.

They've got to try to appear to pay it while screwing you out of your livelihood.

If I were living in California, I'd get out of there ASAP. It's going to be bad.

You know, the chinese faced far far more discrimination in California than blacks ever did. The indians even had bounties paid for their scalps as if they were wolf pelts
