GOP-controlled Ohio Legislature passes election bill to require photo ID at the polls

Ohio legislators sent Republican Gov. Mike DeWine a GOP-backed bill Thursday that would require voters to show photo ID at the polls and allow fewer days to request absentee ballots or vote early in person.

The measure, which would replace a state law that lets voters present other documents on Election Day, such as utility bills or bank statements, was passed by the House in a 55-32 vote.

The bill would also eliminate in-person early voting on the eve of Election Day and trim the amount of time voters can request and submit absentee ballots.

Legislators had considered a pair of competing measures and ended up sending DeWine the more restrictive one.

DeWine said after the vote that he would need to read the legislation before he decided whether to sign it into law.

“The last two secretaries of state have both said that we have a very good system in the state of Ohio,” DeWine said. “It’s easy to vote, hard to cheat, so I think we already have a good system in the state of Ohio.”

We'll see if pantywaist DeWine signs it.

He's probably anxious to protect Democrat Sherrod Brown's Senate seat in '24, who is toast if Democrats can't cheat.

A good start but mail in ballots and ballot harvesting needs to be stopped.

What we need is a Conservative harvesting program in every church in the country. When we use their weapons against them they will get behind stopping the scheme

...such as utility bills or bank statements...

These prove nothing about the person presenting them. Did they have to present ID to validate the utility bill?

I mailed my ballot in this last election.

I had to sign the inner envelope and I had to provide a one of the following with my ballot;
last for dig.of SS#, drivers licence#, or copy of a bill or stub showing my name and my address on it.

They use No-excuse absentee voting which is not the same as mailing ballots to everyone on the list.

“What we need is a Conservative harvesting program in every church in the country.”

It worked for one or two GOP candidates in CA last month, I believe.

We definitely have to do that. Catching older people in church is a good idea. The ones I know won’t miss church for any reason if possible, but might not be inclined to go out to vote.

“utility bills or bank statements...”

“These prove nothing about the person presenting them.”

Really. It sounds like they aren’t serious about getting tough on cheating because this provides no remedy for the problem.

I’ve been asked to show picture ID to vote here in Ohio for as long as I’ve been here (13 years).

A document from a corporation that would bill you, or a bank statement would have to be forged to cheat in this way. That forgery would be fraud (Actual criminal fraud, not just ‘election fraud’). That’s a whole different level of cheating and would also easily caught if done on a large scale. So it makes it tougher to mass produce fake ballots.

They have at least 3 or 4 levels of security from what I saw.
First, the ballots were mailed out to those voters who requested them. They weren’t mass produced generically and they weren’t mass mailed generically.

2) Each ballot was coded from what I could see. IE: they were serialized and unique.

3) You had to sign. Signature matching is a good way to sniff out problems.

4) You had to provide a document (if you didn’t provide your drivers license number or part of your social). This matched your name along with the address on the voting record. The license or SS numbers basically proved your specific identity, but so does the document or statement.

This is a good step ONLY if they ban mail in voting and early voting. Up to 70% of ballots are mailed in early with nothing but a nebulous signature that is easily faked and is usually not checked.

A reason should be required. Folks who cannot make it to the polls getting absentees are just fine with me. But those who are too lazy should not be voting anyway.
