Lizzo issued a rebuke Monday to critics who accused her of making music that only appeals to white people — an allegation raised in her new HBO Max documentary, “Love, Lizzo.”
“[It’s] very hurtful, only because I am a Black woman, and I feel like it really challenges my identity and who I am, and diminishes that, which I think is really hurtful,” the “Juice” singer, 34, said during an appearance on “The Howard Stern Show.”

“It was a Black school,” Lizzo told Vanity Fair for its November cover story. “Mostly Black and brown, Caribbean, I had Nigerian friends … They were all listening to what was on the radio: Usher, Destiny’s Child, Ludacris and I was into Radiohead’s ‘OK Computer.’” “I kept it hidden, even when I was in a rock band, because I didn’t want to be made fun of by my peers — they’d yell, ‘White girl!’” she recalled.

So we’ve gone from music is the universal language to “I only be making music for black peoples”
This “Racism” has got to stop. The roots of rock n roll started in the black community. She should be proud of her heritage,however, making music transcends skin color.
But can she play the swine - ette?
Skin color is NOT the same as race.
Note that many Pakistanis are Caucasians.
It is surprising how many pop and rock performers have classical music training.

Even if she employs a team to do it.. still fascinating.
It's a good business decision to make music that appeals to the group with the majority of the wealth and disposable income wherever you are. In the US it just happens to be whites, who make up the majority of the population and have most of the financial resources. Just business.
I like Rhiannon Gideons. She is an alumna of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and a 2000 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory at Oberlin College, where she studied opera. She’s very talented on the banjo, a great singer, and is outstanding in the folk genre.
Anybody who wants to enjoy her music is welcome to right? So whats the issue? Why obsess about the demographic mix of those who like something and freely choose it?
