On Tuesday, scientists from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in California are expected to announce that they have achieved the “holy grail” of getting more energy out of a fusion reaction than it took to trigger it.
The team reportedly used 2.1 megajoules of energy to create the conditions for the reaction, and achieved a 2.5 megajoules return – an achievement known as fusion ignition.

Used 2.1 megajoules of energy to create the conditions for the reaction, and achieved a 2.5 megajoules return.
0.4 percent gain doesn’t sound like much to get excited about.
OH wait it’s new
Fusion, requiring hydrogen.
Where’s the hydrogen coming from and how is it going to be produced?
“they have achieved the “holy grail” of getting more energy out of a fusion reaction than it took to trigger it”
It doesn’t matter that much if “they” have achieved it. Plenty of people have made such claims before. The real test will be once they publish their methodology, if anyone else can achieve it.
Until Hollywood comes out with THE CHINA SYNDROME PART 2.
That’s not a 4% return, that’s a 19% return.
2.1 MJ to 2.5 MJ a .4 MJ increase over a 2.1 MJ cost.
That is a 19% net gain not a .4% gain.
I still don’t believe it, but we shall see.
Ya beat me to it
They’re still using the world “could,” which most often means “never” with promising tech.
Not sure what, but something seems off with this story.
.4% here, 19% there, pretty soon we’re talking real repeatable results.
I expect commercial grade power plants in just tomorrow plus 35 years.
If true, (which I doubt), democrats and environmentalists will fight to kill this with all of the resources they can gather.
2.1 megajoules of energy?
That’s a far cry from 1.21 Jiggawatts..................
Remember when nuclear power plants were going to produce energy “too cheap to meter”?
Blah, blah, blah.....they said the same thing about nuclear power years and years ago.
“Electricity that’s too cheap to meter!”, they said.
But hey, IF true, great!! I’m all for legitimate scientific breakthroughs.
However, rest assured, the moronic libs will find a way to utterly destroy it...it’s what they do best. They destroy everything they touch...EVERYTHING. They’re now working on the country’s monetary system figuring a way to screw that up....and we just casually let them destroy everything this country has produced, like bad-behaving little brats in a fine china shop while the parents just stand back and watch....
What about clean coal, and cleaner natural gas? Eisenhower said nuclear was clean and limitless. “Clean” is subject to future redefinition.
Stop the solar panels and windmills.
Exactly! I actually like this research. I see good uses for it. But the "problem" with energy today is political, not physical. In this case, the greenies of tomorrow would claim "oh my! We're using up all our hydrogen!" just as loudly as they claimed we were using up all our oil or whatever.
Our energy policies need political breakthroughs more than science breakthroughs.
19 % gain?
