DETROIT – Stellantis said Friday that it plans to indefinitely idle a Jeep plant in Illinois, starting early next year, to cut costs as it invests in electric vehicles.

The transatlantic automaker, formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, said the plant will cease production as of Feb. 28. The more than 1,200 workers at the facility, which produces Jeep Cherokee SUVs, will be placed on indefinite layoffs, the company said.

“Our industry has been adversely affected by a multitude of factors like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the global microchip shortage, but the most impactful challenge is the increasing cost related to the electrification of the automotive market,” Stellantis said in an emailed statement.

Looks like Jeep is going woke. I like my gasoline powered Grand Cherokee.

LOL...”the most impactful challenge is the increasing cost related to the electrification of the automotive market,”

Those increasing costs will lead to inexpensive EVs, right?

Insanity. I've never imagined that there were so many corporate lemmings. They should sell Jeep to Toyota. Let a real car company grab the ball and run with it.

I’d love a classic land cruiser look with modern technology inside.

My 18 yr. old, ~50 mpg, Turbo Diesel, small station wagons are doing just fine, thank you.

I expect to live out my years driving them locally [<100 mi. radius].

To the workers:

Sabo (a wooden shoe)
The word sabotage....

It is believed that the word comes from the rural workers imported into the city by employers to replace workers who were on strike. These rural people may have worn wooden clogs rather than the leather shoes more commonly worn by city-dwellers, and “sabot” was a derogatory name for those workers.

How can there be so many unaware people in this country? Do they really believe families, single men/women are going to step out and buy EV’s? Who is going to buy these automobiles? NO ONE - that’s why people like Newsome will encourage/push laws to BAN gasoline engines!!

They’ll probably raise the average fleet sticker price of their ICE autos to dump endless cash into the EV money pit.

I bought a Dodge Omni built there when they first came out.
People told me not to, as it was the first year of production (1978). Of. Course, I didn’t listen to them, and I should’ve. Cheap materials, shoddy workmanship.
Living in the area, I have had family members and friends that worked there.
I’m sorry to see the plant being mothballed, it’s going to hurt not only the people that work there, but also satellite companies that supplied them with parts.

The corporate lemmings are following the money. They know it is a farce but they are getting huge amounts of tax dollars through subsidies and mandates for doing nothing.

#14: Who the hell is “Stellantis”?

"Stellantis" is the garbage bin for defunct Euro car makers: Peugot, Renault, Opel. Vauxhall, Citroen, etc. It's the dumpster for dead marques.

Fiat sold those lousy Fiat 500s that were built in Mexico.

Complete disaster.

Toyota now builds all of their Tacomas in Mexico now and the quality is terrible.
