Less than a month before those arrested in Illinois will no longer have the option of posting bail as a condition of release while awaiting trial, Gov. J.B. Pritzker quietly signed a package that makes significant changes to the law taking effect in January.
In a press release Tuesday afternoon, Pritzker said the bill (HB1095) “addresses misinformation” and makes clarifications “that uphold the principle we fought to protect: to bring an end to a system where wealthy violent offenders can buy their way out of jail, while less fortunate nonviolent offenders wait in jail for trial.”
The changes approved last week by Democratic members of the General Assembly is the fourth follow-up bill to the Safety, Accountability, Fairness and Equity-Today Act, or SAFE-T Act, which was signed into law in 2021.
State’s attorneys across Illinois sought the changes. Many said barring adjustments, there would be confusion come the new year and the potential that judges would lack the ability to detain alleged criminals accused of some violent crimes.

Another change will make it easier for a defendant to be denied release based on flight risk.
Get out of Jail free ?
No bail + overcrowded prisons = Most suspects get released
Crime rate is going to skyrocket in Illinois. If I were a resident of that state, I’d move right now.
Can they apply for free money from the government to travel to seek out witnesses to kill them? Sort of like travel funds to seek abortions in what Pelosi said are states that "restrict women's health" such as prohibiting abortions?
I guess Chicago isn’t satisfied with 600 murders a year!
If I were a resident of that state, I’d move right now.

I know someone who did. Between rising crime and onerous taxes not much incentive to stay.
They need to build a wall around Chicago. No one gets out!
Get out free?
I think it’s a means to hold wealthy conservatives in lockup for INCITING violence...think Trump, Musk: bloggers;
TV broadcasters; opinionated and papers on the right to shut them up.
I think it will notstand: excessive bail...unconstitutional.
It was democrats who crafted this assault.
I second that.
All in favor...

Effectively they’re socializing prison. Imprisonment and even prosecution will only occur for ideological crimes and no amount of money will change that or make bail.
This is the beginning of the communist state.
This is what years of Democratic rule does to a State. People of Illinois, fight back!
Pritzker is irresponsible.
What this means is they can pick and choose who gets pre-trial release. If you are one of the favored classes (you know who they are), you get out with no bail. If not, you’re stuck in jail regardless of your ability to post cash bail.
Blatant fourth amendment violation.
I’ve been to Illinois for pleasure. I’ve worked in Illinois. Thus, I can say I’ve been there and done that. Now I will add Illinois to my do not travel list.
I live 90 miles from Chicago, we have already had a rise in crime in our area due to bad guys from Chicago coming out here. I have a daughter who lives there with her husband, and do worry about them. They are planning on moving out, to the suburbs in a few years. It can’t happen soon enough…
The GOP in this state sucks, for the most part, they’re assistant democrats.
