U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- On October 11, 2022, a Washington State resident and his wife were hunting birds on block grant land near a creek bottom, with their dogs, in Choteau, Montana. They were charged by a large grizzly bear boar. The 51-year-old doctor was hit by the bear and his lower leg was broken. The doctor defended himself with his shotgun and his sidearm, a 10 mm pistol.
Block grant land in Montana is privately owned land on which the landowner has signed a contract with the Montana Department of Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP). The contracts vary but provide access to hunting and other activities on private land, for which the landowner is paid a fee. Some blocks require reservations; others merely have a sign-in sheet. This block only required users to sign in.
A representative of Montana FWP was kind enough to supply details beyond what was given in the press release.
While hunting, at about 1 p.m., the couple’s dogs went on point, indicating the presence of a bird. Pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, and Hungarian partridges all have breeding populations in the area.
The husband started to approach the area of the creek bottom where the dogs were pointing. This is the common practice while hunting birds with dogs. The bird or birds are flushed, providing a sporting shot for the hunter.
The wife got out her phone and laid down her Benelli semi-auto 12 gauge shotgun to video the incident. The husband saw some brown in the brush, which he thought was a porcupine. Porcupines are common in the area. He stepped forward and a large boar grizzly erupted from the creek bottom coming directly at him.

Being armed and willing to use those arms is critical in defending oneself against bear attacks.
A face full of bird shot would be a pretty good deterrent to any animal Inwould think.
“The idea we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick. Just sick,” - Joe Biden
There are 20 million AR-15 in the US, and 60,000 grizzly bears in all of North America.

You would be dead more than likely. Birdshot in the face, probably won’t stop a human either unless the shot was very, very lucky and a pellet found its way into the brain via the eye socket or temporal area.
Dean Weingarten has been publishing articles about Bear attacks using data he receives from his Freedom of Information Act Requests for several years now. The articles I’ve read are most informative and using the data he generated, Bears have been killed with small caliber rifles, (.22 LR), but more times than not, they are totally ineffective.
However, Mr. Weingarten found a case where a Freeper from Canadastan, successfully defended his dog from a Bear attack with a 6” Bowie knife! Truly a lucky badass Freeper!

“Now boy, are you sure that you can skin Griz?”
“ Birdshot in the face, probably won’t stop a human either”
Lol. The stupid things people say here.
I’ll tell you what, we’ll get a 12g shotgun with goose load in it and shoot you in the face at this distance and see how you do.
I had a friend that was shot in the face with birdshot, which had traveled a far distance and was about spent by the time it reached him. Broke the skin, though, and some had to be plucked out.
Believe me, he was out of commission for the rest of the hunt.
And ‘NO!’ He wasn’t shot by Dick Cheney.

You’re stupid one, go on out into the woods moron or better yet, Chicago on a weekend and arm yourself with a gooses shot or how’s about those awesome rock salt loads, and report back how that worked out for you.
The wife should be arrested for dropping a Benelli the ground. 😉
At under 6 feet (probably less), one shot of No. 4 steel load is about the equivalent as emptying a .38 into someone.
The pellets have not spread and are a solid lump going the somewhere around the speed of sound.
You said that wouldn’t do much to a person.
You are incorrect. It will blow a giant hole in a persons face.

I suggest that bigfootbob get a roll of brown wrapping paper and a sheet of quarter inch plywood, Pin the paper to the plywood as a target. Then at 30ft 20ft 10ft 5ft fire a standard choked-for-duck 12ga shotgun loaded with number-6 shot and look at the patterns and penetrations on the target. I’ve seen it done. Quite impressive.
I am all for everyone being armed, but his lack of basic knowledge (while thinking he is smart) is scary.
