What’s clear is that Kevin McCarthy’s math for becoming speaker is looking quite difficult. What’s less clear is who could fill the vacuum and take over if McCarthy (R-Calif.) can’t get the votes.
Five House Republicans have come out firmly against the House minority leader — a number that could be enough to defeat his candidacy in the narrowly GOP-controlled House. But there’s been very little in the way of putting forward an alternative. Part of that could be they simply don’t know who it is, while part of it could be that they want to avoid drawing attention to the would-be usurper ahead of the Jan. 3 vote.
“As you might imagine, those candidates are going to be very hesitant or reluctant to be in any way public,” Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.), who opposes McCarthy’s speaker bid, told CNN.
A potential McCarthy holdout, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Tex.), added: “No one has got a clear vote that will get you there. And so we’re having a conversation about what it takes.”

The alternative is Hakeem Jeffries.
Jeffries will get no more than 213 votes. Period. No Republican will vote for Jeffries. He would need 5 GOP lawmakers to crossover. Good freakin; luck witnessing that mass political suicide move.
Leftist Voter Fraud has made the entire GOP a dying political party, and what’s scary is that so many in the GOP don’t even know it yet.
I’ll do it.
Marjorie Taylor Greene
Not me, I like the job I have now, though it’s a tempting thought. I would go scorched earth on every Democrat in DC.
Donald John Trump. If only for all the heads that would explode.
What happens if no candidate gets 218 votes for Speaker on January 3, 2023? Does Nancy remain Speaker until a new Speaker is chosen? Is that position officially vacant until a new Speaker is elected?
All he needs is a majority of those present/voting. He can win with 217 or less if there are absentees or people voting present. The press is having a good time speculating, but McCarthy will be the next speaker.
Marjorie Taylor Greene!!!
No more good old boys.
Does Bob Michel have a son?
I retired early (age 52) so I have plenty of time of my hands. I doubt they’d like me though because I’d go scorched Earth on both parties.
At the conclusion of the longest and most contentious Speaker election in House history, the House elected Representative Nathaniel Banks of Massachusetts as its presiding officer for the 34th Congress (1855–1857). Sectional conflict over slavery and a rising anti-immigrant mood in the nation contributed to a poisoned and deteriorating political climate. As a sign of the factionalism then existing in the House, more than 21 individuals initially vied for the Speaker’s post when the Members first gathered in December, 1855. After two months and 133 ballots, the House finally chose Representative Banks by a vote of 103 to 100 over Representative William Aiken of South Carolina. Banks, a member of both the nativist American (or “Know-Nothing”) Party and the Free Soil Party, served a term as Speaker before Democrats won control of the chamber in the 35th Congress (1857–1859). Banks retired from the House to serve as governor of Massachusetts.,
He needs 218 or more not less.
