A week ago the Biden administration announced that it had approved an expansion of the license to Chevron so they could resume oil production in Venezuela.
This was a surprise given the administration’s hostility to fossil fuels in general and oil from Venezuela in particular.

The administration has made a nasty habit of dealing with dictators while leaving our friends high and dry. Such is the case with tiny Guyana, which was recently discovered to be sitting on an ocean of crude oil. Guyana is a dangerous place, but if I was younger, and given the condition of the US, I would be tempted to try to make a go of it. Especially after seeing this video:

Exactly. The quality of Venezuelan oil is so poor refining costs make it unprofitable vs. other regional fields. Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil all have untapped offshore fields of lighter crude. The startup costs are just cheaper in Venezuela. But no-go cuz there’s a glut of untapped oil which is higher quality but with higher startup costs.
