Buttigieg insists congressional intervention to prevent rail strike is 'best way forward'

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is urging Congress to come together in a bipartisan fashion to pass legislation to prevent a looming rail strike that would cripple the American economy, calling it the "best way forward" amid stalled labor negotiations between the major freight railroads and four hold-out unions.

Buttigieg's comments came during a Tuesday evening interview with Fox News Digital at the Memphis International Airport, where he touted a $174 million investment from the Department of Transportation (DOT) for the production of de-icing pads at the facility

"Where I hope to see it going is bipartisan cooperation to move this quickly through Congress and get it to the president's desk," Buttigieg said. "Look, I don't care what your politics are, America can't have a rail shutdown. There is no substitute for a well-functioning rail system in the country."

“Buttigieg insists”. Buttigieg is completely unqualified for the job, so the fact that he insists on anything carries no weight at all. It only insinuates a hidden agenda.

>Thought this was a done deal awhile ago?

The deal was made with labor management not the workers. Four of the unions have rejected the deal.

I am deeply disturbed that we cannot recognize how fascist our nation has become. We the people do not have a right to force rail-workers not to strike because they have grievances with their employers. The concept that it makes my life harder, even during the holidays, doesn’t give me the right to force people to work at jobs or conditions that they deem unfair.

Frankly, there is another way to transport freight, it’s called trucks. This is not an national ‘emergency’, we are not at war. This is a political and convenience issue, and the Federal Government should stay out.

You can be that 100% of Democrats, who have sucked on the Warren Buffett (Union Pacific railroad) tits, will be all in forcing these poor union guys to loose their leverage in a labor dispute.

Only a Statist like Buttigieg has faith in Democrat-led Congress with Senile Joe at the helm. I am scared as to what Congress will give the unions.

“The union, SMART Transportation Division, which represents about 28,000 freight conductors, rejected the tentative labor deal. The vote was close, with 51% of union members voting to reject the deal.”

And the folks on Wall St, the Executive offices and board rooms, the ones that caused most of this just sit back, laugh and watch.

From Wikipedia:

(1) Yard Foreman - A yard foreman, is a freight conductor that has been assigned to a yard job. Yard jobs are divided into 2 categories; Switcher and Industry Switcher.

Yard Foreman Switcher - A Yard foreman assigned to a yard switcher crew is responsible for sorting inbound trains. This is done by pulling out a single track and placing the rail cars from that track into other assigned tracks, as directed by the Yardmaster.
Switch/local Conductor - A switch/local conductor is responsible for servicing local industry customers close to their assigned rail yard. This is done by gathering rail cars from one or more tracks within the yard, as assigned by the Yardmaster, then transporting those rail cars to the assigned industries; and placing them in their designated “spots”. The Industry switcher is also responsible for “pulling” the cars that the customer has “Ordered Out”, and returning them to the rail yard for classification and placement in an outbound train.
(2) Remote Control Foreman - A remote control yard foreman, has the same duties as a “Yard Foreman”. The difference is that he or she also controls the movement of a remote control locomotive with an operator control unit. Typically the remote control engine is unoccupied. Its movements are protected by a remote control zone that the remote control foreman has control of.

(3) The road conductor is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trains from one railway platform to another, generally located in another city or state. The Road foreman is the employee in charge of the assignment and is responsible to ensure that all safety guidelines are met, as well as ensuring that all of the rail cars within the train are “Set Out” at the appropriate stop; often referred to as a “Terminal”.

These are negotiations between privately held companies and the union members that are employed by them.

What does the Executive Branch of the US Government have to do with that?

And the shortage and cost of diesel is causing problems with the trucking industry.

Unless things have changed, back when I worked @ Union Pacific in Omaha, in both in the Law Department and in the Employee Assistance Program (drugs/alcohol) . . . I don’t think the Union workers will take too kindly to Congress or Biden sticking their nose in their contract. Similar to the violence by the union workers when I worked @ General Dynamics in Fort Worth . . . they aren’t too keen on something like this, granted they let the Union boss them around more than they should but this Will Not Be Received Very Well by a Majority of their membership.
