Kevin McCarthy warns Republicans opposing speaker bid not to ‘play games’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has warned his fellow Republicans not to “play games” by opposing his bid for House speaker — saying division in the conference could lead to Democrats electing the chamber’s next leader even though they will be the minority.

Five House Republicans have so far come out publicly against McCarthy (R-Calif.), who can’t afford many defections among the narrow GOP majority to win the 218 votes he needs to be elected speaker.

Republicans won at least 221 House seats in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, but the entire Democratic caucus is expected to vote against McCarthy, making his margin dangerously thin.

One California House race where GOP candidate John Duarte leads has yet to be called.

Hi all,

I think that saying that a Democrat might win the speakership is purely a scare tactic.

From what I am reading, the speaker must win a simple majority of total votes cast, so 218 if all vote. If the dissenting Republicans vote for anyone other than McCarthy there is no way McCarthy can reach majority unless democrats vote for him. Representatives can vote for anyone. They are not limited to choosing between the nominees.

As long as Republicans don’t vote for the Democrat nominee, the Democrat can’t reach majority either. As much as I detest the Rinos, I don’t think they would vote for a democrat.

Even though the dissenting Republicans won’t have enough votes to elect anyone else, they can spoil the speaker election indefinitely.

The worst that would happen if the dissenters stand firm is that there will be no speaker for an indefinite period of time.

Would the Democrats cross over and vote for McCarthy? If so McCarthy still wins speakership, but he wins it having to live with being elected by his opposition.

The outcome wouldn’t change, but at least we would have had some Republicans demonstrate that they actually have backbones.

Best case is that the opposition in the Republican party holds or even grows and they stall the process so long that McCarthy has to withdraw.

What happens after that is anybody’s guess.

I would appreciate it if somebody with more knowledge of the process could jump in here to let me know if this is actually the case.

Love,
O2

Sounds like a threat, not a warning.

This POS should get the hint: We don’t like you, we don’t want you as our majority leader, and you’re backstabbing spineless POS! The base have had enough of those McCarthy types! He’s no different than a rat! Let the nuke explode in the chamber …we’ll take our chances! He needs to go! VOTE HIM OUT!

No. I’d RATHER have a Conservative gunning for the job, versus a RINO.

But, that’s not going to happen this time around. Or ever.

The Uniparty wants Liz and its possible they might get it.
There is a reason why she seemed to torpedo her political future.

Me too. But I’ll take McCarthy over Hakeem Jeffries and call it a win.

Thanks, I’m curious if that’s the actual process. I haven’t started a thread in a long time, but I think I’ll repost it as a vanity question.

“Kevin doesn’t have the votes,” Mr. Biggs said in an interview. “I know he doesn’t have the votes. I know he knows he doesn’t have the votes. The reality is the pressure is on Kevin. It’s not on me.”
