The mistake was to have a rally in the Mall with 800,000. There were bound to be enough provocateurs and idiots who’ll follow them into trouble. That was what happened with the Democrat National Convention in 1968. The massive demonstration against the war in Vietnam was coopted and turned violent.
Massive demonstrations are too vulnerable to the professional troublemaking class and the idiots who’ll follow after them. Instead have many spontaneous, small demonstrations all over the country. They’re easier to organize and harder to disrupt and coopt.
