Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.Va.) side deal with Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to enact permitting reform before the end of the year is on life support as Republicans look to deprive the lawmaker of a major victory that could aid his potential 2024 reelection.
Manchin is in discussions with GOP colleagues about striking a deal on permitting reform in the lame-duck session, but Republicans say it faces an uphill path as they view his West Virginia Senate seat as a top pickup opportunity in the next election.
“It’s a heavy lift but we’re still exchanging ideas,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), one of the lead Republican negotiators on permitting reform.
Passing permitting reform legislation before January, or even next year, may depend on whether Manchin runs for a fourth term. Former President Trump won West Virginia with 68.6 percent of the vote two years ago.

Man without a party. It was his doing. Well, Bill Gates really.
For the next two years he can be very useful though.
Well, we are still dealing with the GOPe in this situation, as with all others.
Manchin won 49-46 in 2018. Republicans hold a slight lead in voter registration. 22% of voters are NPA. It’s doable.
What “reform?”
Manchin is really a progressive lib. He votes just enough on the conservative side to get re-elected. He barely won re-election 4 yours ago. His votes for Biden administration policies has really pissed off West Virginia voters. He will not be re-elected regardless of any deal he made with Chuck Schummer. He is political dead meat unless he switches parties and even then his next election is not a sure bet in the primary.
He is a snake.
They ALL need to get ousted.
Good point!
Capito has been a space filler.
Manchin cannot be stupid enough to truly believe Schumer would hold up his end of the “agreement”. Manchin voted for this knowing the results. Whining that he was deceived is his CYA attempt hoping it blows over in 18 months.
If WVA re-elects this tool, then WVA deserves economic ruin.
This sounds like a win win for Manchin. GOP caves, he’s a hero who delivered for his state. GOP blocks him, he goes back and says he had a deal and the GOP screwed the state and you’d better not elect them, keep me in and I’ll fight on.
Fixed it.
Here is my not-so-bold prediction: Manchin will run again, posing as a moderate. Enough WV voters will be fooled, and he will barely win. Then he will return to DC and be a reliable stooge for Schumer and the communist agenda for another six years.
By allowing the Obama war on coal, Manchin destituted his state for Black goals that required enviro terrorist support
I mean...is it worth discussing whether the permitting reform itself is a good idea or not? All the discussions seems to be about the politics, but none about the merits. I personally don’t know, but that seems completely absent from this discussion.
He cut a deal that everyone but him knew would never, ever happen and now he wants our help! Schumer is his lucy, let him rot.
+1
There’s a reason WV is called the Roadkill State!
Not if we lose Georgia. Then Manchin does us no good.
If we win Georgia, then convince Manchin to switch parties by offering him support in 2024 (but not beyond).
