Well, he did have a signed paper...
None of this is surprising. People who have a good understanding of Taiwanese local politics have predicted this kind of results (as well as most local news station). Seeing the discussion under numerous Taiwan-China posts though, I can understand why people would get the wrong impression. However, I wish we can share more nuanced perspectives on what ordinary Taiwanese think and want rather than the same fear mongering articles written by people who have never step foot in Taiwan.
This election is a local election. People vote for local, administrative issues they care about like childcare policies and elder care policies. I don’t think the results can indicate one way or another how people feel about China’s threats. This article (https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4726888) outlines pretty clearly why national elections and local elections, while linked, tell different stories about Taiwanese perspectives.
Thanks for the explanation and link.
I don’t know much of anything about Taiwan, and I’ve never been there.
I know about TSMC, and that’s about it.
He’ll be (pardon the expression) blackballed.
Wrong thread...the elections winners will shrink back in the face of ChiCom threats and allow the PRC to continue to encroach on Taiwan’s sovereignty, undermining the entire National government. The ChiComs won’t have to fight for it.
The huge building is going up fast - but much work remains to be done inside. Scheduled opening is not until 2025.
The future seems to be interesting with respect to power shifts.
Thank you.
If you don’t see a global pattern here you are blind. Italy somehow snuck through but that will get fixed.
These were “local” elections. The factors at play here were Covid policies, local crime, and governmental issues. China rarely factors into these elections. The new party head of KMT publicly stated the national policies of protecting Taiwan’s democracy and strength would not change.
You’d read it wrong.
Thank you.
They don’t have any real cash. China is the most indebted country on earth. It’s fake ponzi scheme economy is collapsing as is the society.
Because it is far worse than anyone imagines. We’re talking near-total collapse of progress. Xi has destroyed most industries and is increasing state control.
I don’t know the Taiwanese would otherwise reject somebody who advocates resisting China, unless they are more interested in reunification for the sake of peace.
I’ve been saying on numerous threads that a global depression is coming.
I, of course, can prove nothing.
Bank of China, Bank of England, Credit Suisse, and Deutsche Bank have issues.
Real estate in the US and China is a massive bubble.
How far in are Vanguard, BlackRock, and numerous REITs in to the real estate bubble.
Rail strike coming, diesel over $6, and firings in numerous industries.
How about credit card debt?
The list is long and ugly...
Trust me, the Chinese would much rather do it that way if they thought they could. Even if it took 100 years.
It doesn’t take that much to buy crooked politicians.
