Nato is feeling pretty pleased with itself right now.
Of course when you chat to officials in the soulless, concrete monolith that is Nato HQ here in Brussels, no-one expresses pleasure at the current situation in Europe after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But they are quick to tell you how surprised, amazed or encouraged they are, and that the alliance is so "very" united.
And that both transatlantic and EU-Nato co-operation on sanctions against Russia, for example, have been so smooth. This is far from always the case.
"If you'd asked me back in February, or even six months ago, there's no way I'd have predicted the unity we have in our ranks now," a US official in Brussels told me.
So what's the glue keeping Western allies together?
Just think of the countless headlines we've all read predicting the splintering of Western support.
"Ukraine fatigue" was heralded this summer, five months into the war.
Then the cost of living crisis and painfully high energy prices linked to Russia's invasion were tipped to reduce Western leaders' support for Kyiv.
With Russia having the largest stockpile of nuclear warheads in the world, it was assumed some countries would prefer to step away from Ukraine for fear of drastic action by Moscow.
But that was not the case.
"The strong resolve to stand with Ukraine that we see now has been helped by atrocities by Russia - targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure," a leading Nato official told me on condition of anonymity. Like many of the officials I spoke to, they would prefer to be able to speak more freely.
"A daily diet of war crimes, those images hitting our screens day after day. That makes it hard to turn away."

“Russia atrocities bring Nato members closer”
So does taking out the pipeline that was running Europe’s economy.
What of Ukraine atrocities when they bombed Poland and slaughtered 2 innocent people, then blamed it on Russia?
You and those spewing this propaganda are evil personifiied.
God knows the truth and if you think he is going to do anything but curse those involved in all these lies, you're sadly mistaken.
You are a very weird, troubled, repetitive individual.
Here’s Colonel Douglas Macgregor (obvious commie, Russian spy) talking about the Russian POWs that got executed by US backed Ukrainian maniacs, and the fantastic can of whoop-ass they’ve got coming their way.
November 25th - Utter nonsense in Ukraine

NATO would have the US go to existential war to defend the borders of Romania or Bulgaria or Latvia.
None of which holds any US interests whatsoever.
That make NATO an enemy of the American people.
We are on a fake news propaganda-porn roll today!
Wheeeee!
I like how you used the cap from the video uploaded by the known Ukrainian Nazi complete with threats to “collaborators”.
Nobody is buying that lie, Comrade Kazan. Did they put down that mutiny in your neighborhood, as of last recall?
Except that the U.S. is a founding and current member of NATO.
Your claim makes no sense, Comrade Mariner.
There have been atrocities on both sides. There are no good guys or bad guys. It’s naive to think in those terms. Everybody feels justified in doing what they think is necessary, even though a detached observer may not see it the same way. And once a certain line has been crossed, the brutality gets easier and intensifies, until the reason for it is forgotten. Hate and terror is all that remains.
'Is Washington still our ally?': EU accuses US of PROFITEERING from Ukraine war through sales of guns and gas and threatens trade war - as top diplomats moan Biden's green subsidies mean European businesses are relocating to US," in Daily Mail, by Hope Smith, 26 November 2022.
Another war breaks out, this between the BBC and Daily Mail? To which shall we send billions in support? I am sure Mitch McConnell, (Assistant Democrat-K) will be ready, in solidarity with Joe Biden (D).
History will show the US is on the wrong side of this thing, by a mile, and that Ukraine has earned every drop of punishment they are about to receive.
The mainstream media is presenting a patently false depiction of everything that’s going on and has gone on leading up to this. You warped, deranged haberdashers of fake news are useful idiots in this process and I can’t wait to rub your noses in your own selfish stupidity.
But it doesn’t matter.
Funny how these two articles appear at almost the same time.
Is somebody lying?
People made the same argument in 1936.
Look where that got us.

“Except that the U.S. is a founding and current member of NATO. “
My contention is that NATO is contrary to US interests.
Even retards can make sense of that, why can’t you?
In 1936 Germany had the ABILITY to take all of Europe, and much of the world.
In 2022 Russia does not have the ability to take a single country from NATO, much less all of them.
The threats are not even close.
That invalidates the silly domino argument.
In 1936 Germany didn’t have that ability, not even close. It had just started mobilization in 1935. Germany was lacking everything, and was starting from way behind, but it had a years headstart on France and Britain.
In 2022-23 Russia can’t take on Poland, but it can probably take Latvia, Lithuania Estonia, assuming nobody helps them. And, most likely, Moldavia.
And give them a victory over Ukraine and who knows what they can manage in five years. Give them a victory over Ukraine and think what message China is going to get.
Ethiopia in 1936 sent a message - that the center could not hold, that the old alliances were a dead letter, that the old gang was weak and intended to stay that way. This was no small factor in encouraging ambitions in Japan, in Germany.
