A big US furniture company this week fired all of its 2,700 employees while they were sleeping, telling them in texts and emails not to come to work the next day, according to reports.
The mass firing on Tuesday by United Furniture Industries, which makes budget-friendly sofas and recliners for Simmons Upholstery, left thousands of employees including truck drivers and factory workers in North Carolina, Mississippi and California unemployed just two days before Thanksgiving.

If Biden wasn’t president none of this would be happening wonder how many voted for him.
Next year.
They'll blame the GOP-controlled House.
I’m just basing that on number the bankers, economists and gov’t has set as parameters.
That they will do.
“...the LAST thing on their priority purchase list is a new sofa.”
And they can always buy a used one at a garage sale, thrift store or online for $100-$200 rather than $2500. I was commuting between Iowa and California a few years ago for work and was renting a small house there. I furnished it with used furniture from a second hand store. 2 rocker recliners, 1 sofa, 1 kitchenette w/2 chairs, and 1 coffee table/TV stand for $1200. No bed because I slept on the couch.
“I’m just basing that on number the bankers, economists and gov’t has set as parameters.”
Please show your work then. I follow this stuff daily and I haven’t seen that. The last depression was 90 years ago, and unemployment was 25%. Unemployment today is under 4%.
Those people left behind should have been able to see the writing on the wall. Normalcy bias is very strong, though. “They’ll right the ship. Our jobs are safe.”
The good news is the WSF today reports that there are twice as many job openings as unemployed. The bad news is you have to move and learn to code instead of tacking down upholstery on a wood frame.
There is no question we are now in a recession, but not for two years. Brandon took office less than two years ago and it took months for Brandon to wreck the economy.
U.S. economic growth dropped last year, but didn't turn negative until the first quarter of this year. We were officially in a recession in July, after the second consecutive quarter of negative growth, at least as a recession was always defined until Brandon and his lapdog media wanted to deny we were in a recession before the election.
It just seems like two years. It is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. There is nothing Republicans can do to dismantle Brandon's socialist policies while only controlling one house of Congress. It is going to be a long two years until the next election.
It is mass firings like this that makes me have no sympathy for any company I work for. I know any company with any leadership has the capacity to do exactly this to all their workers.
By the way, it is inherent to the capitalist system and is not a function on ‘nice’ bosses or owners.
Two 2yrs in a row of declining GDP = recession, but the demonKKKrats have moved the goalposts. If you believe that unemployment is under 4%, you’re dreaming.
I don't care what she looks like. Not guilty.
“We’ve been in a recession for two years. We’re moving into a depression, very soon.”
$$$$$$$$$$$
I forgot who said it, but:
“Recession is when your neighbor gets laid off. Depression is when YOU get laid off.”
That’s always a kicker to me, the demand that workers dedicate themselves to their companies, when it is not reciprocated at all.
Getting laid off without warning is such a kick in the gut, and to do it right around the holidays is disgusting. Besides losing their salaries, there are some who get bonuses, and bonuses aren’t awarded if you’re laid off at the end of the year. Not a penny.
I will be praying for these families who received this devastating news. They will need help to get through this.
Correction: Two successive quarters, not years.
A cabinet company near where I live in Alabama with several hundred employees shut down about as suddenly a couple of months ago. I think some financing they were seeking didn’t come through. But the company had been in business 25+ years.
I had a feeling you couldn’t support your take, thanks for playing.
Amen.
What a cowardly, inhumane method by United Furniture Industries to handle this.
The Dollar Fifty Store is hiring.
Tech too laying off big time. Is this the recession that we were talking about and that the media and biden refuse to acknowledge?
