Oregon's most populous county dropping charges against hundreds of people accused of various crimes, including hit-and-run incidents and assaults

Hundreds of suspected wife-beaters, burglars, drunk drivers, and berserkers of various intensity will not face justice in Oregon's most populous county, according to leftist Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt. For lack of public defenders, dangerous personalities are being set free under the justified impression that Portland, the slogan of which is "the City that Works," is a legally dysfunctional city in a legally dysfunctional county.

Schmidt announced on Monday that in "February of this year, a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge dismissed the first of what is now nearing 300 cases due to a lack of defense counsel over my objection on the basis of victims’ rights."

The ardent BLM supporter indicated that every week since, judges have dismissed case hearings, meaning accused criminals are being cut loose.

Citing "a lack of public defenders to provide counsel to defendants," Schmidt indicated that the "courts are put in the position of releasing defendants without prosecutors having so much as an opportunity to request bail or release conditions. And it’s not getting any better."

There’s a book “Late Great Planet Earth” published in the 80’s. It discussed the Book of Revelation.

Need to reread it.

AOC (October 17, 2019)—
1)I know the term “prison abolition” is breaking some people’s brains. The right is already freaking out.

Yet the US incarcerates more than anywhere in the world.

We have more than enough room to close many of our prisons and explore just alternatives to incarceration.

2)Mass incarceration is our American reality. It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery.
To end it, we have to change.
That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country.

Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez wants to invest in communities, rather than throwing them away. She has introduced and supported legislation that would give formerly incarcerated individuals the right to vote, equitable career opportunities, and access to all federal resources like housing vouchers and food benefits. She has also called for the decarceration of Rikers.

Most of these crimes would end up with some type of MONETARY FINE which in turn went into various funds running the city.

Without that revenue it's fairly certain that local taxpayers will be making up the difference in the form of HIGHER property taxes, sales taxes, etc, etc.. all while enjoying a much HIGHER CRIME rate. It's called "STUCK on STUPID."

Oh well.. I guess they'll eventually learn.. "You Reap What You Sow!"

What I don’t understand is WHY. What’s the endgame here? Let things get so bad that the public demands the government “DO SOMETHING” so that they can crack down canceling all civil liberties “For a short time” that then never goes away?

a lack of public defenders to provide counsel to defendants
Portland prosecutors have long been acting as public defenders. So what's the complaint?

Portland scores a three on Neighborhood Scout's crime index, where 100 is safest.

So, Portlandia hasn't bottomed out yet, but it's close.

The inability to try and convict criminals "sends a message to crime victims in our community that justice is unavailable and their harm will go unaddressed," said Schmidt. "It also sends a message to individuals who have committed a crime that there is no accountability."

Both of which statements are entirely true. You know what really sends that message? This:

11 days after being elected district attorney with the help of the scandal-plagued radical Shaun King, Schmidt made a name for himself by refusing to prosecute BLM rioters. Courthouse News reported that the leftist D.A. refrained from "pursuing charges of disorderly conduct, interfering with a police officer, criminal trespass and most charges of rioting." Schmidt had claimed that holding rioters to account would "undermine public safety, not promote it." By Oct. 5, 2020, Schmidt's office had dropped charges in nearly 90% of the riot-related cases, reported KOIN.

Due to lack of public defense attorneys? I don't think so. It was due to the attitude the Antifa rioters were spouting, "It's only property." That is, property is theft, and anyone who owns something is bourgeoisie and deserves to have it stolen or destroyed because they stole it in the first place. That same attitude sees criminals as agents of class warfare and Schmidt has internalized that axiom and is acting on it.

RE:; The formerly incarcerated should not have their rights taken away.

Such as G.Gordon Liddy (RIP) and the many Jan.6 defendants? And people who were associates of President Trump and are now used as Banana Republic whipping boys by the corrupt Dept. of Justice?

The self-help author and billionaire insurance mogul W. Clement Stone (almost always seated in the front row of the GOP conventions including for Ronald Reagan) went to a lot of expense and trouble reducing recidivism of people in prison by aiding them with housing, income and training plus
jobs to give them a chance. Mostly in Chicago. He said making them permanent outsiders and lost souls did no good to society or them.

Of course the Jan. 6 prisoners are included in that statement.

That was not a left-wing (or right-wing) statement. It was just plain ordinary layman’s logic: There’s no point in punishing wrongdoers with incarceration if they are not free afterwards. Otherwise the word “incarceration” has no meaning. It is not a synonym for “eternal punishment.”

Perfect scam. Criminals bribe persecutors/court not to assign a defense attorney...and they are home free.
