About 16 million borrowers who had applied for the Biden administration's student loan forgiveness program received letters over the weekend letting them know that they have been approved for debt relief.
However, the letter states that a number of lawsuits "have blocked our ability to discharge your debt at present." The approvals come after two courts blocked the plan, placing legal barriers before a federal program that had promised to forgive up to $20,000 in student debt for about 40 million eligible Americans.
"Your application is complete and approved, and we will discharge your approved debt if and when we prevail in court," Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in the letter.
The letters are helping "folks understand a bit better why they haven't had their debts forgiven yet," noted Mike Pierce, executive director of the advocacy group Student Borrower Protection Center. "That doesn't completely do away with the very real economic anxiety that people with student loans feel at this moment."
He added, "As of today, they will still get student loan bills in January."
The irony of getting approval for loan forgiveness while also being told that the plan might not move forward due to legal challenges wasn't lost on recipients, who took to social media to comment on the mixed messages.
The Department of Education sent the letter to 16 million people who applied to have up to $20,000 in student debt forgiven, telling them they received a green light — at least from the Biden administration. The letters don't inform the borrowers how much of their loans had been erased, however.

Illegal in so many ways...
It probably cost at least $2.00 per letter to send something to a bunch of people they have an email address for. Stupid.
They need to keep these people on edge until the 2024 elections. Just saying ...
So if the court ends up saying they can’t do this...then who the hell approved the funds to even run this program? In other words, it’s an impeachable offense.
Who is paying for these letters? It should be the Democrat Party.
Stupid. It’s like saying you were approved for a credit card, but some guy in applications says you’re not approved, so why send those letters in the first place?
vote for me and I will give all of you a million dollars!
well... now that election is over.. it turns out that I don’t have the money to do what I promised, but, if I get it, I’ll let you know!
*wink* *wink*
The letters are designed to create confusion and upset those who THINK they already got approved for something, for which they had no right to approve!
That is ALL this is about...creating more angry liberals!!
After student loan forgiveness, 73% of borrowers plan to spend more on travel and dining out
Love it. Rub it in. Hey dude, we’re going to forgive $20,000 of your 6 year party to a BA in observational Eastern religious studies ... wait, never mind.
Why not just advise all those people they don’t have to repay their loans, despite what they hear about the courts’ rulings?
Worse than just confusion it will encourage many to just borrow more and invest it in party time.
They are going to continue dangling this “loan relief” carrot in front of these kids right through the 2024 election and beyond. The message will be “if only we can get them Republicans out of power, we can get your debts cleared...also grandma will keep getting her Social Security.”
Stirring the pot. If Biden wants debt forgiveness so bad, have Congress approve it.
How about something for me.
I paid for my college.
I paid for my daughters college.
People have no pride anymore.
Everyone wants to take more out of the pot than they put in.
I paid for my own college degree by working at whatever jobs i could get-mostly as a cocktail waitress since it paid best-no loans-and I am overcome with shadenfreude at the thought of all these snowflakes being played by the people who bought their votes-ay, que lastima...
At some point, they are going to start mailing student loan checks to people, Supreme Court be damned
The Biden administration will ignore any Court ruling as to the constitutionality of debt transfer program and eventually just reduce the amount owed by the student loan debtors. Who is going to stop them? Due to sovereign immunity there is seldom any punishment for government officials’ violations of the Constitutional rights of citizens.
Which is quite probable that it will NOT happen.
In any event it's a CYA move.. either they will BLAME Republicans for STOPPING it... or screw what the LAW states and then take credit for making it happen.
