WASHINGTON—Attorney General Merrick Garland will appoint a special counsel to determine whether former President Donald Trump should face charges stemming from Justice Department probes, according to a person familiar with the matter.
A formal announcement, which is expected by Friday afternoon, would come three days after Mr. Trump announced another bid for the presidency and would mark the naming of the third independent prosecutor in five years to examine issues involving Mr. Trump. The exact scope of the special counsel’s remit and who it would be couldn’t be determined.
The move reflects the sensitivity of Mr. Garland overseeing any investigation into Mr. Trump now that he is a declared presidential candidate. President Biden, who has said he intends to run for re-election in 2024, nominated Mr. Garland to head the Justice Department in part for the former judge’s promise to insulate the agency from political influence.
Some legal experts have anticipated such an appointment. Regulations governing special counsels provide for the attorney general to name an outsider if he determines that the investigation or prosecution presents a conflict of interest for the department and recusals of certain officials wouldn’t be enough to overcome the concerns.

Trump is just in the way of what they are really working toward.
Making Trump a Matyr will only elevate him and clear the field for him. The GOP elite better not back this, as it will be to their detrement. Better for the GOP elite to leave Trump alone and let him ride into the sunset then to encourage the Biden Administration to change him.
So now they can get full attention of the media when they ask for Trump to comment and the words “criminal, Bidens, Pay to play, and Beltway money laundering” come out of his mouth.
Without House-approved funding, Garland and about two million other federal government folks would have to work without federal pay.
This is to get out of garlands hands so he can say so in front of house committees.
They don’t have the courage.

That is why he is so popular despite defects such as verbally sparing with two-legged vermin who should be ignored.
